Keihin PWK 30 Carb

I ordered a Keihin PWK 30 carburetor a few weeks ago and I got it on Monday. When I got off work today it was raining so I went out to the shed and installed the carburetor. It came with a 115, 120 and 125 main and a 38, 39 and 41 slow jets. I installed the 115 main and 38 slow jets. I turned on the fuel and ignition and she fired right up and idled at 1500 rpm's without touching anything. Sweet blip the throttle a few times with nice and crisp throttle response. I let it warm up a few minutes the adjusted the idle mixture. So much easier with it located on the side. I took it out for a quick ride between the rain showers. It was running lean so came home and swapped out to the 120 main. Easy access to the main without having to remove the bowl. I think it's about perfect. Took it back out and did a WOT run. She pulled hard up to 8500 rpm's 1st through 3rd and hit 60 mph before shutting it down. I really like the carb just for the ease of tuning.

Nice. Is the throttle piece difficult to unscrew? It looks like two phillips screws hold it on as opposed to the screw cap.

Also, what's the piece of sheet metal on your valve cover?

It's just two screws. Easy to remove.
The piece of metal is a support for the direct ignition coil.

I'm curious to know how much of a improvement the power jet in this carb makes vs the response of a stock carb. This would seem to be a better upgrade than the VM26, Give us a report as soon as you can get her out on the road to see how it performs.

I take it you managed to get the proper CRF intake for it. Nice.

The original one I bought worked. It just looked like it was the wrong angle but once I installed it i realised I had the right one all along . Over thinking again. Lol

Hopefully I get get some riding time in later today. The power jet gave a good improvement in throttle response over stock carb. With the clamp mount it's so much easier to remove to change the main jet.

That's great Jerry, I really hope this is a significant improvement for these bikes. If so I'd like your links to the parts you bought so I can do this upgrade and a exhaust upgrade at the same time...fingers crossed!

The sad part is my bike runs really good right now....... I bet I can change that!

Sounds great, thanks for the review. So big improvement over stock or minkuni carb? or just ease of adjustment?

Jerry, can you link to the intake you purchased? I bought one similar once, but it was angled down too much for my liking.

I still have the PWK30 and even a 32mm (will work with the CRF intake). sitting in a box. Let us not forget my VM30. It would be kind of nice to run one of them on my next Hawk.

The idle mixture screw is on the side of the carb, that instantly makes it 10 times easier to adjust and dial in.

I had the stock carburetor. I always planned on getting another carburetor and always liked the flat slide carb. I had one on my old Honda 200x and it performed better than the stock carb i had on it. The idle mixture screw on the side sold me. Lol

Honestly, given the opinions of two others that have done 30mm carb installs now, I think that even a 32mm carb is a viable upgrade with head porting. That is definitely getting into "race" bike kind of territory, but for the ultimate in top end power it would be hard to beat.

I came close ordering the 32mm carb. I was waiting for you to go first. Lol I was afraid of losing low end performance. The PWK 30 should flow better than the pz30 as there's no butterfly valve to restrict the flow.

Megadan, remember that Keihin carbs are described by the diameter of the air cleaner side while Mikuni's are described by the venturi diameter. a VM 28 is equivalent to a 32 mm Keihin. However, the Keihin shown in the link has a starting jet instead of a choke which should give improved performance above 3/4 throttle even with the 30mm model...ARH
