They are solar shingles so they just go on the roof and get wired in without the big nasty box over traditional shingles.

having a house built to take full advantage of stuff like that would most likely pay off.

I would like to try them though but then to have a bunch of batteries around and all that I doubt it would be worth it in the long run.
Once they get a really good battery stuff like that will be more practical.

With a good bank of batteries that will hold the energy for extended periods of time (I'm thinking months/years) it would be very good I think.I'd want enough storage to go for a decent amount of time with limited or no charging from the solar cells if need be.

My off grid house has been powered by the regular solar modules for over 20 years now. I have a bank of 10 golf car batteries to store the power, and an inverter changes it into 110V.

Nowadays they have what's called "grid intertie inverters" that feed power generated by the solar cells into the electric grid, turning your meter backward. At night or on cloudy days you draw from the grid turning your meter forward. At the end of the month you pay the power company, or the power company pays you.

Panels are the future, But as the panels have advanced the battery technology has lagged. Not to mention the cost of it is fricken crazy. They say in thelong run it saves....But who has the kind of money it takes for the panels if they are having problems paying an electric bill? Something has to give and the power companies and coal companies and et etc are going work hard to keep it expensive.

Edit: Oh I see it isn't out until next year. It is supposed to be cheaper then regular panels but not as efficient.
