Camping With The Grandkids

Peace and quiet has settled on Chez Fromage. Finally. So, thought I'd update everyone on what should be a sanity test for just about anyone. Camping and fishing with grandkids and going WITHOUT Grandma. As seen in the above pic, I'm getting stink eye from Karis. I used to get the same look from her mother at that age. Eli is in Eli Land.

Smartest thing I did was take the two connivers to a local campground only 10 miles from home.

Eli goes camping a lot with his parents but it was a first for Karis. Both kids helped set up camp.

Hot dogs are always better when camping.

The fishing part was mostly me baiting hooks and taking pan fish off said hooks accompanied by sighing and quiet swearing from grandpa. Kind of wearing.

After dark, I had the kids get ready for bed, but then had them come out to the open field and chase fireflies. They had a ball.

I made backpackers' scrambled eggs and bacon for breakfast the next day and Eli informs me that he DOES NOT LIKE BACON! I start to wonder if he was switched at birth. Karis does not like the texture of the eggs, so she won't eat hers, either. Therefore, I eat well. Eli then says he will eat the Coco Puffs his Mom sent if I will pour the milk on them.

Me-"What Coco Puffs?"

Eli-"These."

Me-"I don't have any milk."

Eli-"But why not?", followed by whining and pouting.

Me-"Eat 'em without milk."

A little bit more fishing and then we broke camp and went back home. On the way home, I stopped at the local bakery and got both kids a donut and milk. I got myself a very large and very black coffee and asked for a shot of scotch in it.

Got the kids home and Mrs. C said I looked like hell. Apparently, the trip was hard on Karis, too.

That’s so cool, I can’t wait to have grandkids. I have 5 kids my oldest about to be 21 and my youngest 12. I have all boys and 1 stepdaughter. Me and the wife discussed having another, came really close but after some serious thinking decided against it. Being out of the woods and all so to speak. We’re ready to start enjoying alone time, no kids honestly, can’t wait for the grandkids though especially at that age yours are at. Thanks for sharing!

K and I had a nice ride last Saturday, too. Just the two of us. We rode to the Sycamore Speedway for dirt track races. We took her the previous Saturday and she was hooked on the speed, noise, stink and the fact there were women racers. She has become a big fan of one of racers.
We got out after ten, when the last race was finished, and the ride home was perfect. Moonless, cloudless, and windless. I found a shortcut that got us out of the race traffic early on and K actually stayed awake for the entire 35 miles.

Yes she is. Will be ten on the 13th. Reads and comprehends at a 12th grade level, but is still just a ten year old. Is a thrill seeker who’s afraid of spiders. Has been begging me to let her ride on the back seat of the Ural but she’s still too short to reach the foot pegs. She does fit on the Honda but I said no to that. I won’t see her again until turkey day.

Her little sister is going to be pretty interesting, too.

As much as the struggle is still fresh in my mind from when I took my kids camping alone (20 years ago), I am looking forward to taking grandkids. I'm ready for that, but my kids aren't ready to be parents yet.
I can't remember the last time I saw fireflies.

Don’t rush into it, think hard about it first.

I don’t have many memories of rough times camping with my kids, but I may be suppressing them. I do have a photo of the two of them in rain gear, looking absolutely miserable at Cape Breton. Maybe it was pay back. I don’t think the black flies and no-see-ums helped their mood.

I can't wait until this little guy gets to be old enough to go along. A whole different personality from his older brother.
