Brother Billy's 1980 xr80

This was dropped off by for me to make run. Looks pretty good overall. Tank has old gas, but looks clean. Throttle cable is not stuck, engine no stuck. Should be a runner shortly.

Will need tires, tubes, rear fender, maybe a throttle cable, chain?

Needs to be ready for Christmas.

That won't take you long. I'm guessing that the '80 has a CDI, just like the bigger brothers.

Speaking of brothers, is Billy a biological brother or a church brother?

CUTE!

How long is that muffler? Looks like it goes off the page!

He would be a Church Brother. More like a father. This is for his grandson for Christmas.

I think that the xr80 of this vintage has points under the flywheel cover.

Doc, the muffler ends shortly after the pic. The end of it is pretty rotton though.

No spark so probably need to clean the points.

If you have compression and all you have to do is sort the simple points ignition this should be a successful and satisfying project. Lucky grandson, coming right up!

Sweet bike! I learnt how to ride a manual on an old XR75 . We all had CT's at the time so the XR75 seemed big and exotic! :P

I am sure it was running when his son stopped riding it. Been stored for 20 years maybe.

Thanks for sharing this nice project with us, Allen! That looks like a great little bike. I'm sure Brother Billy's grandson will be very happy on Christmas!

I may need some help with it. Hopefully it goes easy. Billy has quite the car collection, but he not a mechanic. All original 60s fords and chevys.

If you get the chance, please post some photos of Billy's automobiles, Allen!

Carb float does not look too good. New ebay carb. $30. Float from honda. $30

End of the exhaust is pretty rough.

Pretty clean under here. I need to go borrow my flywheel puller back. No spark. I scraped the points alittle and got a weak spark. New points $10.

And a car pic. My Dad and his 56 Ford with a 352 police interceptor engine. Pic taken in Texas about 1960. This was the fastest car in NW Iowa.

Great pics .

The floats were crushed by water getting into the bowl and freezing.

I wonder how hard it will be to clean that carb or if it would be worth it to spend a little more for a replacement carb off eBay. I'd be inclined to go that route myself.

I'd JB weld or muffler goop-seal the heck out of the muffler, sand it and paint it with BBQ paint. Seems to work on The Dirt Rat 2 allright.

I think I would probably buy the replacement carburetor, Allen. If the old carb causes problems in the future, you will probably be asked to fix it again.
