hydraulic cylinder

this is pretty far out there but maybe we have a farmer or heavy equipment mechanic out there.

I disassembled one of the tilt cylinders on my loader and replaced the seals and am catching a little hell getting it back together. there is an internal lock ring that keeps it from spitting the plug out and after 4 or 5 times of putting it back together and pulling it back apart I can't get it to engage and have no idea why. It appears straight forward and hard to screw up but some how I am. I have successfully got it into the groove on the plug and into the cylinder repeatedly but it just wont engage for what ever reason. The ring is in good shape with plenty of tension and the groove and plug are clean with no debris, dirt or grime to fill the groove and I am at my wits end trying to figure out what possibly could keep the ring from falling off in the groove and engaging and any ideas would be much appreciated.
