In production since 1987 but it's days are numbered...
The KLR is to be discontinued....
Wonder if it will be replaced ?

I had read that a while back. buying a new one is overpriced, but always wanted a new one. i had a 92(baja kit) with kickstart only, and all the power i would want. i don't know why they discontinued them and to wonder what possibly they could pitch that wouldn't be overpriced too.

My guess is they will eventually bring it back with either fuel injection and a better engine design or ditch the single cylinder and shove a dual piston fuel injection engine in there to meet emissions...

In a word..... EURO 4
Yamaha have stoped prodution of the 660 motor..
I would think this is the reasoning behind the KLR..
Big singles are very hard to make meet emission control
standards... to much gas to deal with in one hit..
why they are moving to twins... smaller exhaust gas pulses
a motor bike is just not able to carry the parts needed
ie... big enough cat... The cats on a lot of bikes are still
to small at the moment...but once EURO 4 comes in for
motorbikes the cats would need to be 3 times the size
on most big singles...
the KLR having a carb isn't helping matters...even with injecton
it would still not meet EURO 4... closer but still not there..

so I have read!!!!....

Cars and trucks are at EURO 5... If that standard ever comes
in for bikes.... don't want to think about it...
Emission control parts will become part of the WOF so no after market pipes
to remove the cat or cutting it out of the standard pipe or blocking/removeing
the AIS systems... exhaust sniffers will be in all testing stations...
It will come......

Suzuki's DR650 may be the next to go....

If they do bring out a replacement for it, I hope it has a snappy little twin in it. I really enjoyed my KLR, but it would have been nicer to have a little more oomph and better suspension.

I really wish they would keep them both for the American market. I love my DR. It's such a capable rig. I don't have a lot of experience with the KLR's, but I'm sure they're much the same. I like the fact that the DR has a carb, and that I was able to change the exhaust and rejet the carb for better performance. I don't think a fuel injected bike would be a good choice to take back in the middle of nowhere, because if (and when) it breaks, you're going to just be stuck. You can't put a fuel injected bike back together with chewing gum and bailing wire. My favorite story to tell about why carbs are so much better involves being out in the north Georgia mountains on some logging roads. A friend of a friend that was riding with us developed a leak from the carburetor bowl. Turns out, the o-ring gasket had cracked and was no longer making a continuous seal all around the bowl. The solution? The guy took a small blade of grass and laid it across the split in the o-ring. Put everything back together and rode it for the rest of the day with no leaks. A roadside fix like that is not something that can be done on an FI bike. Personally, I'm more than happy to stick with my carbs.

not sure why they wouldn't just put the 650 Versys motor in it.

Love my 99 KLR. Wouldn't trade it for the world. Fuel injection would be great though. Got to be something to replace it for how big the multi and adventure bike market is right now.

Don't worry Liamsdad, I will trade my 99 in for the world... I mean what good is having a KLR 650 with no world to adventure around on... but in doing so, you will have to let me ride your 99 so I can at least get my KLR fix

The KLR will be replaced with something similar. Kawasaki will not abandon the dirt bike riders, no matter how well the multi-cylinder ADV bikes sell, IMHO.
