Just got a 2009 Tao Tao ATA-150B and now a ATA-110B

Hey guys. Stumbled across this site during a search. My neighbor down the street had this brand new Tao Tao 150cc 4wheeler sitting in her building out back. We had just purchased her grand parents 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan with 46,000 miles on it for just $1000 and I asked her what else she had for cheap. I was just joking around when she said "I got a 4wheeler I bought and don't ride" My wife and I were just discussing a need to have one for our camping trips a few days before. I gave her $700 bucks for it. Her invoice of $1025 that she paid for it.

This thing has been run for only 2 hours before it was stored away for nearly 2 years. I cranked and cranked it for nearly an hour until I got it fired up enough to run it 2 blocks up the street to my house. It wouldn't idle but if you kept the gas on it a bit you could run this thing full bore anywhere. I put it up for the night and the next day NO LUCK! I couldn't get this thing to fire for nothing. After doing some research on this site and some others I found that I needed to fully clean the carburetor. I did so soaking it in a can of carburetor cleaner and then hand cleaning the jets. I found that the Pilot jet was totally clogged and the main jet had several holes gummed up. This thing had sat with fuel in it until the gas line had rotted and leaked all the fuel out of it. My last year's mower gas probably didn't help either.

Yesterday I got the carburetor cleaned all up, replaced the plug with a NGK and she fires up and purrs. I'm pretty amazed at it's power and speed. With both my wife and I it pulled us up a good hill. I'm 210 lbs and my wife is not a small woman herself. I was really surprised and how loose all the bolts were though. Today I plan on tearing it all apart and putting some lock-tite on everything. There's still a lot of the shipping plastic stuck between the body panels and to the headlights. Being a performance guy I can see myself toying with it to get some more out of it but for a campground worker this thing will do perfectly.

Welcome!

Good score on the Caravan. 8O Which engine does it have?

Excellent score on the atv; it would appear that it's a GY6 engine with no gears or clutch. We have one like that as well. It looks like you got a model with long control arms, so I think that bumpsteer will be minimized (or non-existant).

The van is a 3.3 engine. Although I'm not a van person I do like the milage. I have a 2001 V10 Excursion I drive for my car audio business. Rolling sound demo vehicle and I work out of it as well. Though the 11 MPG is killing me when it's just to do basic jobs. I take it out when someone needs a demo or I have a big on-site job that needs more than a simple tool box.

You are correct about the ATV. It does in fact have the GY6 engine and is automatic. I am in no way a ATV guy until recently with this purchase but with anything I am a researcher. I have learned so much about these engines and these Tao Taos just hitting various websites.

You said you have one of these Weldangrind. Have you done any upgrades to it? I really hate the headlights so I think I'm going to fit a set of HID lights into mine. I can get the kits fairly cheap through my distributor and I have no problem custom fitting them into it. I have been researching and found that you can get a performance CDI and coil for these but when I look them up I find about 20 different ones with the "performance" lable on them. Which ones are sh*t and which ones do the job? If anyone has upgraded anything on these Tao Tao vehicles let me know. I'll give anything a try. It runs great and I should probably leave it alone but I just never can...lol

The 3.3 is a solid engine; I really liked the last one I had. The one I have now (a 2009) is a flex fuel vehicle, so it's a little underpowered on regular gas. It wakes up nicely on E85 though.

I've done a couple of simple mods to the GY6 (I have the same engine but a different body). I've dumped the stock airbox in favour of a Uni pod filter mounted on a piece of ABS pipe, and I installed a free breathing muffler. I also re-jetted to compensate, and I installed a performance coil.

I still need to fatten the main jet one more size, but otherwise it starts and runs great. I haven't tried a performance CDI on it yet, but I'm in no rush. I'm not sure if the coil is anything other than a change to an orange colour, but it was cheap.

If you choose to run HID, make sure that you use the existing headlight wires to trigger a relay, and then power the relay straight from the battery. I wouldn't trust the Chinese wiring to power more than 18 watt bulbs. H4 lights might be a better choice. Beware that any lighting will pull the battery down quickly.

Well I think I've caught the sickness. Got on to Craigslist and found a guy down the street from me that had a Tao Tao ATA-110B youth 4wheeler. This one is the camo one and we did some trading for it. I own a car audio business and he was needing a couple remote starters installed into his vehicles. He already had one for me to just install and then I traded him another one. I've got about $275 in it. This little thing runs great. We had a BBQ at the house for Memorial Day and everyone was having a blast on the full size 150cc while the kids played with the 110cc. This was up until the chain snapped! Oh well. Guess it's time to buy some stronger stuff for it. I really like these Tao Tao units but I'm still fresh with them. Now I'm looking for another 150cc or bigger for myself so the family can ride together.

They're totally addictive. I'd buy another 200 atv if I could get approval from Mrs. Weldangrind.

It snapped and twisted it in half.
