Hi-Bird 150 ST dies when shifted to forward

Just acquired a hi-bird 150 st, don't know what year it is and have no manual. Rewired it and got it started but when I shift it to forward it dies. It works fine in reverse. If it is pushed while shifting it goes into forward and works fine. Tried adjusting the cable but it doesn't help. Can someone help me with this?

The ATV doesn't have a neutral switch. It has a CVT transmission I think
Thanks
