Valve Ticking/Adjustment Clearance Hawk

Ive heard everything this side of the Mississippi on the correct valve clearance for the Hawk 250. Mine came with zero clearance on the intake and exhaust so I adjusted them today after about 500 miles to .006 on the intake and .007 for exhaust. The bike starts up better than ever but the ticking noise is pretty loud. Ive heard that you want some ticking, but I guess how much is too much? Very arbitrary without a decimal meter and legitimate science, now that Ive made this question as complicated as possible, what do yall's adjusted valves sounds like and is the sound prevalent even when accelerating and/or at higher RPMs?

My valves had zero clearance, I adjusted them both to .006. They are silent when cold but when the engine gets warm they are noticeable. Mine don't sound any louder than those I've watched in various Hawk videos on youtube, so I'm guessing I'm ok.

Before I adjusted them, the bike was very hard to start, now it starts immediately.

The problems come when the ticking stops.

That's pretty loose. I think you will like .002 and .004, or .003 and .005 better.

I re-adjusted to .002 and .003, it sounds much better and still starts easy as pie. Thanks for the info, guys

Complete rookie here so please excuse me if I'm missing the obvious, but why is the exhaust lash set higher than the intake? Would it be ok to set both at say .004"?

Dan

Excellent question, Dan. It's common to give the exhaust side a little more expansion room, due to the extra heat.

Resurrecting an old thread, have there been any developments on the hawk valve clearances or is the RPS spec good? I see the manual lists them as 0.05mm, though I like the sound of ARH's recommendation of 0.03mm intake and 0.05mm exhaust better:

It depends; are you looking for maximum performance or maximum longevity? I steer towards longevity and use the same spec for both valves. Tappy valves are happy valves.

Valve lash on CG engines increases as the engine heats up. If the valves are closed well enough to get it started you're not going to burn a valve. Some owners and shop manuals for CG engines call for .002" for both valves. Some call for .002" intake and .003" exhaust. The Honda shop manual for the original CG 125 calls for .003" on both valves. I use .002" on all my CG engines to keep them as quiet as possible but any clearance up to .005" shouldn't be a problem except for a bit of noise.

0.05mm it is! Thanks all!

Also I run at 30 front 32 rear, no particular reason other than 40 is too much in my opinion.
