Chain Guard & Chain... Upgrade

Anyone have this issue with chainguard? Mine seems to have been sawed by the chain...

Also help me identity this chain logo?

This 428H chain is not rated for motocross riding. Any tips to avoid having it break on the trail before I upgrade to 520?

My chainguard disappeared one year on the way to the border of Canada in 2017.........I called it the "self weight loss program" for better performance.

Cleaned the chain and soaking it in used ATF overnight...

Bought JT Master Links from Amazon. The middle one is factory. Hoping this is enough insurance when the chain do break in the middle of nowhere...

When my chain broke it gouged all four sprocket bolts (luckily still able to remove them) broke the drive sprocket guard, cut the gear position wires, and dented and gouged the swingarm. Didn't even realize the swingarm was damaged till my replacement parts arrived. Now I'm gonna have to pay around $60 shipping plus a new swingarm. So you might want to think about replacing the chain sooner rather than later.

Jay's already wore out the stock chain on his TBR and is gonna swap it with my stock chain that I never used. In my opinion the stock chain is just a liability and I wouldn't run it 5 feet. If it breaks it will wrap around your front sprocket and knock a hole in your sidecase and then you'll have to get pretty creative to patch it with JB Weld.

That's why I went straight to a quality 520 O-ring chain, sprockets and genuine Honda sprocket studs. You only have to adjust the chain once after initial break in and then forget about it. If it starts looking like it needs a second adjustment just replace the chain. You've got enough to worry about out on the road without having to concern yourself with your final drive line too.

Yes indeed, would have hurt!

Why a 520 chain, isn't that overkill? I wonder how much more sprung weight from the bigger chain and how much power is lost in the rings. I suppose a 520 o-ring has less loss then a 428 o-ring because of less links.

JTSprockets.com says their none o-ring 428HDR will handle up to 200cc Dual sport, and so is the 520. But the 520 can go up to 350cc for motocross. I think I will upgrade to 428 o-ring at the next chain adjustment and 520 with sprockets after that.

Really? You're concerned about the O-rings causing some imagined power loss? And a weight difference? I guarantee you my nice 520 is causing less rolling resistance than Jay's stretched out stock 428 that is eating his sprockets as we speak. And if it was overkill why did every Japanese manufacturer upgrade to 520 even on their small bikes? But if you wanna run a flimsy little non O-ring chain in the hopes of gaining an immeasurable amount of performance and trade off bulletproof reliability..

428 and 520 you can't mix the 2 huh.
IMHO when chain is poor just upgrade to the USD$35 Unibear O ring chain from Ebay and get some sprockets and do the 520 upgrade
