Weld , I just ordered a tool off Ebay that is double sided with 2 sizes. I though the screws were kinda funky when I unscrewed them on the slinger.

I ended up trying clear Gorilla Glue to fix the air cleaner. so far it looks good except it made the glue joint really stiff and not very flexible. It said it would work on foam so I gave it a shot. Time will tell.

The seagulls have landed. Front motor mount ,painted , ready to mount back in frame even though it looks questionable. Now onto rear wheel spokes and turn signal broken pieces. rj

It's alive!. Runs, rides, shifts nice, very quiet. Need to replace turn signals as these are broken but work still. Only weird thing when riding is Speedometer is wildly optimistic and the trip and odometer are not turning, but speedometer and tach are? Anyone have experience taking their speedo apart and seeing why this would act up? Would like them to work for keeping track of for oil changes and gas tank fill ups .
I found a complete rear tire assembly that had heavier duty spokes at a salvage yard near here so I put it on for the cost of a good tire. rj

That very cluster came stock on my Lifan, but the speedo and the tach were wildly inaccurate. I installed the speedo from my Roketa (which is in miles, not km) and it is relatively correct.
There is a formula for selecting a speedometer, but I can't recall how it works. I think it's a reference to the rpm of the front wheel, taking the circumference into account. What I do remember is that 2240:60 means the speedo cable is turning 2240rpm at 60mph. Some metric speedometers reference 60km/h (about 35mph), so you'll occasionally see a ratio like 1344:60, which is identical to 2240:60.
If you choose to buy an eBay mechanical speedo, it would pay to first measure your front wheel circumference and Google the formula for speedometer calculation. Make a chalk mark between the right side bottom of your front tire and the ground, roll the bike forward one complete revolution and make another chalk mark. Measure the resulting distance between the chalk marks to determine the circumference.
Of course, the alternative is to buy an electronic speedometer and go the magnet route.

Going to State Patrol this Thursday for vehicle inspection to get registered and licensed. Hope they don't look at our welds rj

Anyone know how to get the trip meter reset nob off? I need to get it off so I can look at the speedo inside to see why trip meter and odometer are not working. There is a small hole 3/32" in the end of it and I put a rod in the hole but I don't feel any release or screw head to unscrew. Has me stumped and it's the only thing in the way of victory rj

Maybe pressed on? Try using two matched spoons across from each other to see if you can pry it off.

I ended up cutting a notch in plastic above the reset shaft. I think nob may be glued on cause no way was it coming off. Saw what problem is that odometer and trip is not working. I'll try and figure out tomorrow how to fix. rj

Interesting . Seems like gear is stripped below the magnet rotating thingy. The tach has the same gearing setup driven off the magnet turny thing but I cant tell what it does on the tach as it's not driving anything except a gear to nowhere not turning anything ???? Maybe it just adds some friction to the whole works to make it all run evenly? So if I could R&R the axle with stripped gear off of tach and put it in the speedo, then Bob's your uncle.
Any instrument repair guys on here that knows what all the gearing to nowhere does on tach?
How to fix stripped gear in speedo w/o having to disassemble the whole shebang?

2nd pic with arrow shows end of stripped gear shaft. If I push that axle in towards mating gear , then it turns like it should. If I don't push it in, then theres enough slop in the holes that gears don't mesh up enough to turn.

So I McGuivered it with a piece of brass sheet to push gear axle into mating gear more and super glued it onto the speedo bracket. That will allow us to run it and see if speedo ,trip meter are working . May not last to long but at least now we know what to fix. 30deg here so may be awhile for another trial ride. rj

Can you make a square pin the same size as your drive cables? If so, you could check it into a drill and drive both speedo and tach (slowly) to see what each component does.

Great work on the bike so far. I just gotta say this, though, I hate the headlight on these bikes. I've seen them through the years and it is always the first thing that catches my eye. To each his own but if it was me, it might me the first thing I would change.

Isn't that about the size of an air cleaner for a riding mower? I wonder if the outer foam, if not the whole thing, can be found at a local big box home improvement store. What does the underside look like?

david3921 , thanks for the idea. A bit over kill on my end but it worked to see all the gizmos turning.
I'm going to venture a guess that the root cause of the speedo gear stripping was old grease that had turned into hard shellac type stuff and froze the gear axle which allowed the cable driven speedo gear to wear the other gear and maybe sloppy Chinese tolerances so they couldn't mesh together anymore ????
Box store air cleaner another good idea, I'll use the original for now to get it broke in , but keep an eye out for a future replacement when I'm in stores.
The underside of air cleaner looks just like the top side in pic above except the center concave part is punched out to suck the air thru and match the oblong hole in the air cleaner housing. rj
