i have to ask, what are we talking about doing to the head ... it does not look like there is any room to go bigger with valves, is the "port" smaller than the valve? ... will the crank and rod hold up to a milled head? ... i am with you, i feel there is power in the head, i just dont have time or money to test stuff :( ... i was also thinking about a cam, but dont know if there is room for more cam (as in valve clearance and would rockers still work) would a longer duration help any on this type cam?

milling the head = compression... compression = power at the cost of heat. ( detonation etc can all be bad things...) also porting the passages would possibly yield some nice results.( bettoer and smoother flow means engine breathes better and... makes more power...) cam is useless in this case as it is a single lobe cam that operates both intake and exhaust... i cant see any benefits there... bigger lobes will pull in and spew more exhaust, but there is the point of diminishing returns especially on such small displacement. megadan has a brand new head hes going to port and polish and do everything he can to sap some power out of, and even provide dyno numbers... after his hawk is fully broken in...

There is a ton of room to port this head out, and the stock compression ratio on the Hawk engine is 9:1. Milling up to 1mm would bump the compression to around 10:1... The rod and piston would be fine. As far as valves, they are more than adequate as they are in terms of size, although I may try to find a stainless steel set of valves I can use in this head, but even that isn't really necessary.

Here, a little visual help for you from somebody with a little money and a lot of time...and tools.

Just my personal opinion, but don't bother with a cam - which nobody makes that I have found yet. For one, with the way the stock ports are, it would be a waste of money because the stock ports are just too restrictive to make the best use of anything other than what's in there. Far more useable power can be obtained by simply porting the head properly. We aren't talking about radical port work, just removing a lot of restriction while trying to maintain charge velocity.

Plus, I got this head off of E-bay for about 50 bucks to my door. I already have a die grinder and a variety of bits, and I can use my mill at work IF I decide to deck the head, which I don't think I will, it will be maybe .5mm tops. Honestly, with a good port job alone, I think an honest 3hp is realistic. With a bump in compression maybe 4-5 tops (this is just bench racing mixed with some previous experience). I would rather avoid the compression increase without having a proper way to control ignition timing, plus the increased heat and pressure could affect reliability in the long run. Which is why, if I do mill the head, it would be to gain half a point, at most.

My ultimate goal is to try and coax about 20hp from this engine without spending a ton of money, or ruining the low revving, torquey nature that makes it such a great motor.
Feel free to comment on my linked thread if you want to discuss this further, I don't want to derail this thread.

Mega, like you say , even a modest gain would be worth it while maintaining all the good characteristics it already has.
