I had the "Performance CDI" people talk about on my TBR7 for like 3 months and it failed on me, nearly leaving me stranded.

Would not recommend them at all.

Looking at reviews you can also see other people having issues with it and someone even having it cause damage to their starter somehow.

Here's my thread when I had the CDI box issue.

The cheap cdi boxes don't have an advance curve to them like the stock units. Proper ignition systems retard the timing at lower rpms for easier starts and cooler running. Without that timing pulled at lower rpm, you get hard starts and very high cylinder pressures.

I could see those high cylinder pressures putting a ton of strain on a starter if it's kicking back while trying to start.

The best ebay/Amazon CDI I have tried is the adjustable purple units. The adjustment moves the advance curve around in the rpm range so you can set it to come on sooner for a better low end and mid range boost while still having a soft idle and easy starts.

If you want to have something reliable, a cfr230f cdi box works on the carb Hawk. I am running an aftermarket one on my Hawk.

Not impressed with my blue one, glad it was cheap.

But, you got links to the purple one, or the CRF23f one you are using?

Thx!

The brand for the purple.one I bought doesn't even exist anymore lol. It's basically this one, sold by a bunch of vendors. Quality seems.to be hit or miss, but mine works good still after a couple of years.

As for the crf230 unit. I bought the Procom box, but it was under 50 when I.bought it. Currently it is 75 dollars. Was it worth it? It didn't blow my hair off, but my bike runs and rides.
