1. Throw up a picture of the cylinder head and cam carrier.

If it's not like a Honda CB motor, where the cam runs in plain bearings that are partially in both the cylinder head and the valve cover, they aren't machined as a unit, and therefore can be run together.

I can answer two and three after I've seen some pictures.

As for the noise that your're hearing, I would verify cam timing and check the timing chain tension. It could be that you didn't install the front guide properly, but again, pictures are needed before I can guide you much in anything.
