Wow!

This is a fast moving thread!

Nice motor and 'just what the doctor ordered' as we say!

Now to find an XR250/400 with a bad motor...

Oh wait, there hardly is such a thing, the motors are that good!

I wonder if a guy can get the engine for a good price without EPA?

Do you think these will come ashore? Any idea on price?

Good work, Weld!

I just discovered this bike last evening, and I didn't think to check out the Honda NX engines. I'm not surprised the X5 engine is a copy of the NX400 engine. The Chinese engines with an electric starter copy the NX versions of the Honda engines instead of the XR versions of the engines. We saw this same copying occur with the bottom end of the Xingyue engine.

I bet the Shineray X5 engine is a faithful copy of the Honda NX400 engine, which is the exact Chinese engine many of us have been hoping for! Here are a few photographs comparing the Shineray X5 with the Honda NX400.

I actually like appearance of the Shineray X5 better than the Honda NX400.

Yes, the Xingyue 400cc engine was a water cooled, hybrid motor with a defective NX bottom end and a Rotox top end. :( The Shineray X5 appears to have a faithful copy of the air cooled, Honda NX400 engine!

Even the oil cooler placement on the two bikes is similar.

I especially like the khaki (?sp) colored Shineray.

These bikes are not prototypes; they are currently being manufactured by Shineray. However, who knows if they can meet EPA standards. I wish QLink could be convinced to import these bikes.

Obviously, this bike is more of an "adventure" bike than a dirt bike. Nevertheless, the Shineray X5 appears to be an excellent value, and I would love to own this unique motorcycle.

The engine is listed for sale on Alibaba, and the complete, Shineray X5 motorcycle is listed for sale on Taobao. However, shipping costs would likely be prohibitive when buying a complete motorcycle. Licensing this bike would probably be very simple in Idaho. Come on QLink! Bring the X5 to North America!

Let's compare the right sides of the two engines.

Here are several more photographs of the Shineray X5. I love these air cooled, Honda XR/NX engines!

What do you think would be a fair pricepoint? $4,000? What does the new Honda 700 go for? $7,000 or so? If the 400 was priced any closer than $2,000 from the 700 I'd go for the Honda. With a $3,000 gap the Shineray would be a very good choice.

Given the severely good/low pricing of the Honda the Shineray will have to be priced very aggressively as the Honda is a ridiculous value...

Good idea but poor comaparison on my part. Maybe the DRZ400S is a better comparison. It costs about $6,500 so I'd say a $4,000 pricepoint would be good.

I agree. I don't think they could charge more than $4,000 for the Shineray X5. Honda is aggressively challenging the Chinese for the world market in motorcycles. When Honda is selling the fuel injected, CRF250L for $4,499, MSRP, in the United States, how can the Chinese compete?

Nevertheless, I really like the air cooled, NX400 engine in the Shineray X5!

Besides the wonderful, Honda NC700X, let's not forget the venerable, Kawasaki KLR650, which has an MSRP of $6,499.

I doubt the Shineray X5 will ever be imported into North America. The Chinese importers are increasingly too greedy, and I don't think they can compete with Honda's quality, international support, and wonderfully aggressive pricing.

I agree Spud.

I think if the Chinese brought that bike here a few years ago it would have been a different story but Honda is the 800 pound (364 kilo for our Canadian friends  ) gorilla in the North American motorcycle marketplace and they are pissed and ready to squash competition.

Witness the 1-2 punch against Kawasaki with the street and D/S 250's in the past year, and the NC700.
