I filled it with tranny fluid, reassembled with the piston all the way back, and installed it. Wow, 100% different and better. Dampening has returned and is functioning correctly. Probably has leaks, but this will work for a time. And, I know how to refill it.
Seals are long past it

Great work !!!

I found an interesting advert on clist while visiting mom here in Alaska - looks like a Yamaha xt200, lying in the weeds, 1982 vintage although listed as late 70's, and only 75$ obo. Missing front wheel assembly. Looks like carb and air box and header pipe etc. are all there. I think I'll go check it out. Offer 20$ or something. Will report back with pictures if it happens!

Well, I bought it. 20$. If nothing else, the header pipe guard will go on my roketa. It's pretty rough but maybe I can get it back together using eBay. Any Chinese clones that have the same engine?

Why is it that every old crappy bike I buy, someone has spray painted over the plastic fenders ? Ugh. It's evidence of teenager, or at least 20something year old behavior... Maybe it's equivalent to the 'go faster' garish stickers the Chinese bikes have on them. It also reminds me of trailer court names. The fancier the name, the more of a dump the place usually is. Human nature is quite interesting... And, as if anyone doesn't notice...

Spud's Zong was born with the same motor.

Thumbs Up

I put the JT racing sticker on my bike with tongue firmly ensconced in cheek.

Also the half burned up BMW Rondelle I got off a burned up beemer under an overpass at a 4am fire call. It's my work in progress.

I came really close to putting the UNI sticker on the Roketa when I put a new air filter on it... Put it on garage wall instead...

This old Yamaha has a skateboard shoe company sticker on its tank.

And the obligatory rattle can spray job, which the Roketa had too, in black which of course over sprayed the engine, and so did my Suzuki/Honda...

I feel bad for bikes when they get to the point in their life that a teenage boy is spray painting them. It's a sure sign the end is near. That's when we gotta step in and bring them back to life.

I've heard that Zong is assembling/building these bikes in Italy, for access to the Common Market. Under the name Zongarucci.

I'm in Alaska. Gonna go on an adventure ride on Saturday. Taking my old suzuki with the Honda engine. Will go about 65-80 miles back on a mining trail, up to an abandoned mine. Pretty much pure wilderness. Should be fun! I've done it a few times before, 4 wheelers, and 2x in a jeep. Too rough really, for jeeps but we made it with some judicious winching.

Alone? Cell service? Bug spray? Good luck!

Second bike and rider, check.

Cell service, doubtful. Maybe the first 20 miles.

Bug spray, definitely.

Supposed to be a high of 79, and sunny. No darkness of course, at this time of year.

Maybe some bear protection is in order... Check.

Food, check.

Extra gas, check.

Tools, check.

When do you head back to Oregon? Will you be crossing at Abbotsford? If so, I'd love to meet for a coffee.

Thanks for the offer! I flew up this time. There may be a road trip to Prince Rupert and beyond next summer tho so I'll keep that in mind.

Your offer is reciprocated if you get to southern Oregon btw. Exit 106 on I-5. And bring your bike; after coffee we will go riding! Goes for any of you fine individuals with Chinese or other, dual sport bikes.
