You can't stop the orbit of the Earth around the Sun, Pete! Spring is coming to the Northern Hemisphere!

P.S. You don't even have harsh winters in Australia.

I'm sorry about that, Pete! I remember all your beautiful photographs from New Zealand. I got you mixed up with several other forum members from Australia.

If a person buys a globe in the Southern Hemisphere, is the South Pole on the top?

Does a toilet flush clockwise?

In the northern hemisphere, the water will flow clockwise down a vortex. In the southern hermisphere, water will flow counterclockwise down a vortex. Directly on the equator, water will flow directly down the vortex, without spinning. Check out the following video recorded on the equator in Kenya.

Obviously I have not been paying enough attention to my toilet.

Good video!

Just don't drop your cell phone in the toilet again!

I just showed the video to my partner and nurse!

Next question is, is the effect much more prominent at the poles? I bet it is!

but at the poles the rotational speed of the earth will be slower... would that have a efect?

I've going to retract my earlier post. Apparently, the video to which I referred was a bit of a hoax. According to Wikipedia, the Coriolis Effect is not strong enough to cause water flowing down a drain to rotate in a consistent direction based upon the Earth's hemisphere.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coriolis_effect

Indeed, the Coriolis Effect is so small on a water vortex, it can only be measured under very careful, scientific conditions. Also, the Coriolis effect is magnified with greater distance from the equator, so it will be stronger at both of the Earth's poles.

There are a number of different videos on YouTube which supposedly demonstrate the Coriolis effect. However, the practitioners are either intentionally, or unintentionally inducing a small, initial vortex in either direction when they travel a short distance to either side of the equator.

The stinks.

We had a good time watching that and I explained what I understood about the force.

It seemed amazing that the equator could be plotted so exactly that 50 feet on either side would show a difference. Oh well.

I read on Wikepedia that the force is stronger the further you are from the equator.

So you are saying that my toilet is not a labratory?
