Temperature?

We installed a Trail Tech. The model included a temperature attachment to the spark plug. What should the temp be during normal running conditions? We are reading above 300.

I have seen Higher temps than that on mine. Keep in mind that the location of the sensor is where the most heat is located.

What I did on my trail tech is watch the readins for a while to see what was normal for my bike. After a few rides I looked at what the high temp acheived was and set a warning light at 10 degrees below that. The light come on occationally on deceleration after a run but will quickly go out when I get on the gas.

I will try to look tonight and see what the highest temp that has been recorded so that we can compare.

Thanks for the help! I emailed Trail Tech and they did not want to quote any numbers for liability reasons.

Don't blame them. :(

A reasonable idling temperature would be about 200 degrees. This would be affected by the carb setting. If very lean it can reach 300 and this can be a warning than the normal running temperature will get too high.

Mid-range can be about 320 to 350 and full throttle can get as high as 450 for short periods, when you should throttle back until it goes below about 380 or so.

Sorry, but I forgot to look last night and unfortunately I will be away till Monday evening.

One thing that happens that I did not expect but can reason out. When you back off the throttle, The temp will go up, not down. It is because as you get off the throttle you are leaning out the fuel.

I wonder if a temp sensor located somewhere else on a air cooled engine would work better? Maybe someway to measure the oil temp?

FWIW, on an airplane's CHT gauge, over 400 sustained is to be avoided, 375 or less is optimal. Over 435 is bad.

This is how they do it on water-cooled engines. The oil gauge normally shows about 10-20 degrees Celsius above the coolant temperature of about 85ºC. Gauges are marked in red at about 110-130ºC where if it reaches there you're asked to reduce speed until such time as it drops down.

I have the Vapor unit.

Removed the factory speedo but left it's mounting bracket in place. Took a flat piece of sheet metal about 2X4 inches and drilled the mounting hole using a template in the owners manual. Positioned the sheet metal piece under the old bracket and the Vapor on top. Really simple actually.

I'm using the Vapor. The mounting was done with some thick aluminum strip from Home Depot. Two pieces cut into two u shapes. Very easy.

According to the Trailtech site, the temp sensor they include with the universal Vapor unit is a coolant sensor. Is this the one you guys are using, or did you find one with the head/plug sensor?

We ordered the universal unit. It came with the water temp sensor. We shipped it back and they exchanged it for the spark plug sensor. I'd ask them which unit to buy so you don't repeat our mistake.

And you need to tell them what size spark plug you have.
