I have never been a fan of cutting back valve guides. I just shave as much as I can around them. The guides themselves don't actually sit in a bad place. Its just the amount of casting around them that eats up so much port space. You could probably cut them back a bit though.

As far as heat into the head goes. A better flowing port, in my experience, makes for a cooler head, port, and valve since the burning exhaust gas exits faster.
