New Shineray X5 has Copy of XR400R Engine

The new Shineray X5, dual sport motorcycle is in production. This bike employs a fairly close copy of the Honda XR400R engine. Here are links to several, interesting threads.

Finally, the Chinese are manufacturing a copy of the air cooled, XR400R engine, with an electric starter! Here's a photograph of the left side of a Honda XR400R engine.

It's nice to see new Chinese bikes, with larger displacement engines. However, I wonder if this bike will ever pass EPA mandates, let alone get imported to the United States at a reasonable price. :roll:

It appears the Shineray engine has a manual decompression lever on the right exhaust valve, just like the XR400R engine. Here's the Shineray engine.

The major difference between the Shineray and Honda engines is the location of the clutch lever on the right crankcase cover. The Shineray engine places the clutch lever approximately 90 degrees counterclockwise from the Honda location. Perhaps the clutch lever was moved to provide clearance from the large electric starter. Also, the Shineray engine does not have a separate cover for the clutch plates; therefore, you would need to remove the entire right crankcase cover to service the clutch. However, I need to do the same thing to service the clutch on my Honda XR650L.

The Shineray X5 might lack an oil reservoir in the engine frame and downtube. If this is the case, the Shineray might store the engine oil in its large, well protected, external oil cooler, which is placed high on the downtube.



This appears to be a well manufactured motorcycle.

It appears that most parts of these two engines would be identical, excluding the crankcase covers, et cetera. The Shineray engine appears to be very robust and a reasonable copy of the Honda engine. I much prefer the simplicity of this air cooled engine to the other, Chinese, water cooled engines.

The Shineray X5 also has an adjustable shock absorber, with an external oil reservoir.

The cylinder bore and stroke are identical between these two engines. Engine displacement and compression are also identical. Both engines also share a 5-speed transmission. Since both engines employ a 4 valve, RFVC (Radial Four Valve Combustion) design, I must assume the Shineray engine is a very faithful copy of the Honda engine, except for the minor differences I mentioned earlier.

Looking at the engine mounting points, I assume the Shineray engine would mount perfectly in the Honda XR400R frame.
