Bought my Mom a Harley.

Early 70s AMF Harley golf cart. I have been looking for a gas cart for some time for her.

I have spent much time on it yet, but I cleaned the points and got spark. Put alittle atf in the cylinder to lube it up and spun it over. It has some compression, but I have not located my compression tester to check it yet.

I am on the fence about rebuilding the current engine or swapping to a predator with a reverse gearbox.

Nice score. Parked at least one in the drink. If your luck is anything like mine, you'll give up looking for the compression tester, buy a new one, and set it down on your bench. Right next to the one you couldn't find.:)

I know its general location. It is just buried.

You are a good son.

I like your predator engine idea. Those old AMF engines can be a pain to get parts for, or so I'm told.

This is why I am just thinking of swapping to a predator.

That is one cool golf cart!

Oh, PLEASE do the Predator! I'd love to follow that project.

I am pretty sure we will go Predator. Just the few parts needed to possibly make it run will cost more than a 212cc predator. I am leaning toward the 420cc. That should be enough to power it. The vtwin would be nice, but I don't think it will fit under the seat. Also Mom does not need to go very fast. It is two blocks to the convenience store and about 8 blocks to Dollar General.

Next will be to save up money for parts.

Please make suggestions on how to go about this. I need to retain reverse as she won't be strong enough to push it backwards.

Some under the hood pictures. The rear axle and engine ride on a swingarm type of setup.

Use a torque converter (CVT) to drive the F-N-R box.

Here's a video that may help. It's kind of long but hang in there. Daren has some ideas. He also has a lot more videos on that vehicle. He has one that shows how fast that thing is. It's fast.

This is one I'm following. Can't wait to see how it turns out.

Kato, what is the current setup? Is it a two-stroke that starts and runs as you press the gas pedal? Does the starter double as a generator? Is reverse actuated by running the engine in reverse?

That is pretty much the setup I am looking at. I think I am going to go for the 212cc predator. We have no hills to climb and speed goal is 15 to 20mph. Currently it has a starter generator setup. I think I can make it start the 212 also and that would retain the charging system.

Yes to all of above.

I think I could remove the recoil off the predator and put a pulley there for the starter generator.

Sold the Harley shortly after I bought it. Two Club Cars popped up and one had a cab with a dump bed. Mom wanted that one. I have acquired most of the parts to complete the conversion to gas from electric power. 11hp Honda engine with electric start and charging system. Comet style belt drive and a forward reverse gearbox. The Harley went to guy who wanted a restoration project.

I am going to try to get started on this project soon. Right after I get my 61 international lo boy running good and cutting grass. My shop is a disaster at the moment.
