Spudland revisited!
Roger and I recently returned from a wonderful trip to Spudland with our friend, brother and guide Spud himself leading the way.
Pics to follow soon. Roger and I took our bikes (DRZ-400S and WR-450R) to Idaho in Roger's Chevy truck and rode from there. What a variety of riding we got to do! We rode through deserts, salt flats, and even across a causeway on the Great Salt Lake. We rode in high timbered mountains over 8,000 feet. We could not go higher because that was the snowline. We did get to ride across some snow at the snowline. We saw large clear blue lakes, and a variety of wildlife. I thought I saw Bigfoot, but as well know they are mostly in Oregon and Washington, rare that far inland. We were blessed with great weather although one day we were close enough to the thunderstorms to see and hear the lightning in the mountains of northern Utah. Spud kept us off pavement most of the time except when necessary, and no highway at all. All paved roads were pretty country roads with great scenery. All the bikes performed perfectly. Spud rode his Zong, his RX3, and his CRF, and his XR. I sampled the XR and RX3 and the 225cc Yamazong this visit. Ride report on the RX3 to follow... |
So envious! I'm looking forward to pics. Spud is the perfect riding guide.

That looks awesome and also tons of fun! Mrs. 2LZ and I must make it up that way someday.
Looking forward to your review of the RX3, Doc. |

Sorry about the duplicates and dead text. Photobucket on it's best day is a pain in the arse.
BTW the pic of the lake with the snowcapped peaks I took yesterday in a different place, Joseph, Oregon... Not sure how it got included. |
I want to know who that stranger is with you in the picture with the train in the background. It can't be Spud. He was born with a helmet-in-place. ;-)

Awesome pics! Looks like y'all had a great time :)

Man, what fun times! Thanks for sharing the pics

This is a shot of SOWAG and Spud next to the same sign you're standing near:

I thought I felt some special Candian energy at that spot...
I also diverted along the Transcontinental Railroad easement and it was a blast. I was parallel to the main 'road' Roger and Spud were on. The roads started to diverge and I was in the back and was afraid we'd get seperated, so I took off cross country to get back with my group. That's when Spud told me about the bent wheel... |
I think the wheel got bent in a big pothole on a gravel road, further South of the old rail bed. SOWAG loved riding that bed, just like you did. I think his rim was bent about 30 miles out of Bonneville.

thanks for posting great pictures! great cameraderie under the northern sun!

Nice report Fastdoc, always wondered what a Spud looked like. I was in Hells Canyon area last weekend in Enterprise at the Wallowa Hells Canyon Rally and just missed you guys coming home Sunday. rj
|
I'd have gone...
How did you all navigate Hells Canyon? GPS I assume? Where did you download the route? Thinking of riding out there in a week or two. BTW, you all don't know if that picture is of Spud or his evil twin... |
