PROJECTS ??? anyone

Anyone planning any interesting projects this winter on their bikes?

I'm torn between doing some mods to the wifes bike or just parting both of them out and going jap(drz400).

For me I guess it sort of depends on how my 250x-2-300ex conversion works out.

fatboy250 11-26-2007 04:01 PM

I'll be riding mine....we have rather mild winters here :D

katoranger 11-26-2007 04:19 PM

I plan to fit the DR tank and continue riding all winter too. Might need to make some new side covers and I am also thinking about crash bars to protect the shifter and brake pedal.

TeamCheap 11-26-2007 05:14 PM

It would be nice to be able to ride all year but even as I type this we are getting a little dusting of snow.(a wet 1" or so)
It's still early but for the most part riding on the street on a bike is out.

I have riden out on frozen lakes on my old dt250 and it was a blast, no spikes just rubber tires and my boots holding me up (I doubt I could do it now).

That DR350 tank should be an interesting mod hope it goes well.

rosrok 11-26-2007 05:26 PM

My winter bike project is rebuilding two (one for my daughter and one for me) Kawasaki KZ400 street bikes. I was going to put the two into one good one, but my daughter had other ideas. I bought both bikes for $100. Other than tires, engine gaskets, and exhaust, I have found everything we will need. Of course, the one I wanted is the one that needs the most help. Hers runs and is pretty much all there. Mine isn't running and was missing parts. The Roketa is parked and forgotten until spring. Although, I did go quad hunting on the internet this afternoon. Several family members want to go trail riding, but don't want to tackle a bike. We are expecting several inches of snow and 30+ MPH winds tonight. The only trail riding until April will be on snowmobiles.

IronFist 11-26-2007 07:40 PM

I am working on my 1972 Honda CB350 K4 like a mad man! :D Still waiting on my points and condenser. It's already running way better. I would have taken it out today, even for 10 minutes, but we have a lot of wet leaves after a cold snap. Looking for a dry day just to do some testing. We didn't get snow till Jan 1 last year. It's already too cold for a long ride, but it's insured year round, and with the mods I've done, even booking up and down the street a couple times would be fun. I miss riding already  and winters are so long in Toronto. Maybe April? :x N2r/

TeamCheap 11-26-2007 08:50 PM

Sounds like some interesting projects going on.

I still have a strong desire to put that extra china 200cc engine I have in a blaster frame or maybe a lt230 frame.
My quad is just about rideable and once I get some brakes on it I'll be able to test ride it.

My wife is laughing at me right now because we just had a guy from a gas supplier at our door at 8:30 at night while were trying to watch a movie and here he is trying to sign us up.
LOL I went off on him, a bit to much maybe but He just came at a bad time and signing up for anything at my front door is a big NO-NO for me.

yeah it may have saved us some money but from what I have heard it doesnt really save anything but I'll have to check into it.

Q 11-26-2007 09:03 PM

I rebuilt my seat. Too cold to go riding so I can't say if it's a big improvement or not. Will probably go down to Death Valley for the 2 weeks around christmas and new years and give it a good test. Looks good though.

knothead 11-26-2007 10:24 PM

I plan on going through my TDM 850. New emulsion tubes, engine and fork seals and a good set of dual sport tires. With luck I can score some luggage too. I'm wanting to take a summer trip either out towards Yellowstone or North into Canada, either one would be a long trip.

SamM 11-27-2007 01:54 AM

My latest project is to finally get my '05 Yamaha TT-R250 streetlegal. I've been riding the bike on the highway, a little! Don't tell! Anyway, the last hurdle is to mount the Trail Tech computer with a permanent odometer, get the inspection done, the inspection papers filled out and the pictures taken of the additions. This will get me a new streetlegal title and a new plate. New Kenda DOT tires have also been ordered. I still need to check to see if those are in and pick them up. This bike will be used both on & off-road, so I decided to go with the more off-road oriented Trail Tech Vector computer. I'd like to ride the complete Trans-America trail with this bike. It will be my main ride this coming year as my KTM 950 is up for sale and now advertised.

My other project is to get my Zongshen X-Ranger 200 turned into an off-road/hunting atv replacement. I'll keep the bike streetlegal so it can be used locally. I may commute a bit on the bike but it will be geared lower for off-road use. This may make commuting tough. New bigger black wheels and a new camo paint job are on the list for that bike, along with fixing the leak and straightening the frame.

TeamCheap 11-28-2007 05:32 PM

We put a vapor on the wifes quad and it works very well you'll like the trail-tech computer.
The one must have addition for us next spring will be the garmin combo radio/GPS units to simplify are offroading adventures. We use radios now and they really help but the GPS would be very helpful out in the woods.

I finally got to ride my 250x-2-300ex frankenatv today.
yes it was a bit rough but I think I can smooth it out enough to make it decent.
I see a lot of little things still left to do on it but it does fire up and run.I was doing tight little donuts in the yard on the snow/ice covered leaves FUN-FUN-FUN.

I wish I had the fenders for it but oh well I'll just have to get them ASAP.The fenders will push the total cost up to about $1300 if I buy them new which is what I'd like.

Cheap,
There are no pics in your Gallery but ya got one??? We want more pics!!!!

Current and planned mods

I ride a Zongshen ZSM 200gy-2

Current mods:

- Have blocked off the secondary air induction device thingie for more back pressure
- Swapped the CDI and battery out after having some minor issues
- Using road tires (mostly riding on road)
- removed mud guard and tank cover, including the air directing fin things under the tank cover
- Drilled holes into he air box to allow more air in and same size whole into the end of the exhaust to allow air out

Planned Mods:

- Building a custom sheet metal or fiberglass tank, want to get 20 - 50 Liters
- Moving the batter to allow an under seat fuel tank (part of the tank any how)
- Having a custom performance exhaust made (under engine exhaust to reduce weight and give a lightly lower center of gravity
- changing to bright LED based indicators and HID lights
- swapping out the front disk brake with a high quality unit
- building a fiberglass Windscreen / front fairing
- hardening the shocks front and back
- considering trying to get a 18" rear wheel in (if I do I will change both front and back to solid rims
- swap out the rear cog to get longer legs (better top end speed, less acceleration)
- add a fuel warning light / gauge while building a new fuel tank (might consider using a fuel pump rather than gravity fed.
- looking for parts I can change to get less weight on the bike overall, and higher quality
- looking for higher quality bearings
- looking for air filter / carb and various other things that might help with to end performance.

Would like to try fit one of those Vapor computers to the bike, though I'm not sure how well it would work as I don't think there is any where to tap onto the engine to read RPM's and so on.

Just to give you an idea I can currently hit 140km p/h in almost all condition (even with my girlfriend on the back) add all the mods and I look to chnage the bike into a long distance super motard style cruising bike

SamM 11-29-2007 05:10 AM

New wheels and tires

My Zongshen built X-Ranger 200 is going to get a new 18" rear wheel too. My plan is to use an 18" Jetmoto rear wheel on the front (since I already have it) and move the 2.15" Zongshen wheel to the rear of the bike. The rear Jetmoto wheel is 1.85" wide. The stock 15" rear wheel makes tire selection difficult on the bike. These sizes are just too odd. My bike came stock from the dealer with knobbies. I've tried to find replacements knobbies but as far as I can tell none are available. Another thought is to buy a new 19" Jetmoto wheel for the front. The 19" front tires are much easier to find.

My X-Ranger gets terrible fuel mileage. Combined that with the small tank, and a range of only about 75 miles is possible. To extend the range my plan is to remove the stock rear rack and build a bigger rack to carry an extra fuel can on. Since this bike will only be used off-road and for short local trips this will be enough for me.

jdnva,
Your bike sounds great! Can you post some pictures of it? Here's one of mine.

I'll be adding my new Moose Racing handlebars and a set of Moose Racing handguards to the X-Ranger soon. The forks will be swapped for a set of full sized inverted forks from another chinabike. This will raise the front a few inches to level it. I need to get the bike back and start working on it.

TeamCheap 11-29-2007 05:52 AM

jdnva sounds like a serious amount of modding planned and it should be an awesome bike,

I have done a K&N airfilter and rejetted plus an after market pipe for a xr200 and it really added to the low end power and woke my bike up and it is now extremely fun to run offroad even in the sand.

I dont plan to much more for my bike but if we keep them the wifes bike will get a major makeover this winter.

I've already done :
installed a OHC engine just because I wanted to check it out
K&N airfilter
aluminum after market exhaust
aluminum handlebars with barkbusters
a universial headlight
made very durable almost unbreakable nylon side panels
relocated the electrical components and removed the side stock side panels for a more comfortable standing ride(no rubbing on my legs when standing now)
moved the battery so it doesnt get cooked by the exaust pipe anymore

About the only things I still want on it are wider footpegs and a crash bar under the engine to help protect the shift and brake levers.

ambassador so you want a picture of my frankenATV??
rigth now I have no pictures of it in its current state but I suppose I could come home today and snap a couple of pics and post one or two but I got to warn you it isnt a pretty quad.

jdnva 11-29-2007 06:36 AM

these are some pics of the bike as it was, will have to post some of what it looks like currently and more once I have finished modding it.

TeamCheap: What exactly is rejetting? (must excuse me have only been riding for about 4 months now +- 13000km's on the ZSM 1000 +- on a F650GS and a few hundred on various sports bikes)

Where exactly do you put the air filter? I don't see any obvious place to put it on the ZSM

TeamCheap 11-29-2007 05:31 PM

You have to remove the complete stock airbox from the bike which will most likely take up a lot of space. It will be under the seat and attached to the carb with a fat tube.

I removed the stock airbox and was glad I did since I seen just how poorly it was made after I got it off.
It had gaps in the box after the filter which meant dirt could have gotten into the engine.

So with the stock airbox off the bike I started measuring up the space I had in the frame and had to allow for the battery which I was planning on moving but there was a lot of space and the K&N air filter I chose fit very good and just attaches to the carburater itself.

With an after market airfilter the bike ran a bit better but I didnt HAVE to rejet it until after I put the freeing flowing aftermarket exhaust pipe on.

With the free flowing airfilter and exhaust pipe the engine is flowing a bit more air thru the carb/engine which will cause a lean running condition which gets corrected by changing the main jets in the carb that meter the fuel.
So rejetting is simply changing out the carbs main jet to one closer suited to the engines needs.Mine came stock with a 98 and if I remember correctly I stopped at a 115 but still feel a 117.5 would be better.

It most definitely had a large impact on my bike that was easily noticable while riding.
Before the changes I could hardly get the bike to start off in the deep sand it would bog and stall at times and it was a handful to control until it got some speed but after the mods and rejetting the thing was like a different bike in that it would just take off in the sand and excellerate and was much more controllable because of the power it has to get thru the sand easily.

Even with the mods it is still just a 200cc engine and can only be expected to do so much but there is a bit of room for added performance.

Dont ask me how it impacted my fuel economy I DONT CARE.

Had not actually considered that I can get rid of the air box, will make more space for the fuel tank :D

is the 98 stock a setting or an actual piece of hardware? could you give me a picture of it or maybe an idea of where you can get one

SamM 11-30-2007 12:20 AM

The jet is an actual piece of hardware that installs into your carburetor. It screws into place. Take the old one out, put the new one in! These can be changed after the carb has been removed from the bike. Space is tight on these smaller bikes. Your Sierra, like my X-Ranger has a Mikuni carb. This is a Japanese carburetor which is a great upgrade over the Chinese carburetors that come on most of the chinabikes. You got your Mikuni straight from the factory. Very cool! The carb should have both a main jet and a slow jet depending on the configuration. That's just a guess by the way, don't quote me on it! The carb will also have various screw adjustments on the outside of the carb. Be careful not to screw with them http://s3.amazonaws.com/advrider/lol8.gif unless you get some reliable information on what to do.

Below is a picture and a link for one of the better dealers of these parts. You may be able to do an ebay search and find what you need.

Hope this helps!

jdnva 11-30-2007 02:23 AM

Yea thanks very much :D

oh I got a price on the HID light kits, they are like R 1680 (South African rands so say like 247 USD)

Had a chat to the trail tech guys and they can fit the bike with all of the features working to the bike, though am debating if I really need a temperature gauge and rpm counter as the bike hasn't got any as it is.

also managed to source a fuel warning light system from Yamaha, so will grab one when I build the fuel tank

jdnva 11-30-2007 04:05 AM

Take a look at these carbs and let me know what you think

http://www.mikuni.com/fs-carburetor.html

my carb has a logo stamped on it with the letters "TK" in a bike circle so not sure what make it is

jdnva 11-30-2007 06:36 AM

Bike without the tank and mud guard as it is currently (have changed to road tires though)

I was thinking about buying one of these and installing a lifan pit bike motor like a 140cc.

TeamCheap 11-30-2007 10:55 AM

katoranger
Go for it I think that would be a very fun project also.

katoranger 11-30-2007 11:43 AM

That one is only a couple hours away and I have a co-worker that is from there with a truck. I may see if he wants to pick it up for me.

I think with a 140cc lifan that it might be a good commuter toy. I can always part it out.

driller 11-30-2007 10:33 PM

Sam, You should think about a ghost camo job (black, gray, white) I did this to a competition compound bow a few years ago, very easy and with the flat black of your bike it wouldn't take much. If you are interested I can try to get some pics of the bow. By the way how are you healing?

SamM 12-01-2007 01:46 AM

Driller, I'm leaning towards the camo sticker kit. It's going to cost me around $150. It's an easy process to cut a stick the material onto the bike. They cover ATVs with this stuff all the time.

I've been out of the sling for a week or so. I'm basically back to normal now. The shoulder still hurts a lot but I've milked it about as much as I can. I've been riding motorcycles for the past two weeks. Thanks for asking! I appreicate the concern.

TeamCheap 12-02-2007 12:16 PM

jdnva, that is one HUGE picture.

Do ya think maybe you could downsize it a bit please.

12-03-2007 02:28 AM

I guess my project will be to buy a brand new Lifan and then take it apart and put it back together with locktite and lock washers.
also tape up electrical stuff. i am going to think of it sort of like building a model. :)

katoranger 12-03-2007 08:10 AM

Thats a great winter project. Look over the wiring harness too.

Allen

TeamCheap 12-09-2007 03:24 PM

My headlight bracket on my frankenatv. It's just a piece of 2" angle iron cut-bent-welded and mounted with a couple of rubber grommets to the handle bars.
I now have decent wiring from the left switch controls, a real keyed switch on it but I still need to make a bracket for it, rebuild the rear brakes and I need fenders and to tidy up a few others things and it should be good enough to take out for a real test ride.

If I can find a blaster chassis minus engine or bad engine I'll put that extra 200cc engine I have in it ASAP.

I'll probably wait until late february early march until I begin the wifes bikes mods.

IronFist 12-09-2007 08:47 PM

Yep that's a BIG pic, I'm on dial up LOL :o

Kato that bike went for 72$. I've seen a really nice cb 350 and cl 350 on Ebay. $500. I feel like writing the guy a note. Mail that bike to me and I'd get 2,500$ for it, clear title. Man you guys got it good on bike prices down there.

I've re-jetted my mains and mid jets, new condenser and points, spark plug caps, and did the timing. After rejetting I got the complete carb kits and replaced pretty much everything inside and set the float levels. Not too worried about the final tuning till it warms up, but the bike is running stronger and smoother. I had it out for a little test the other day, in 2nd gear I opened the throttle to about 8000rpm. ( I have a tackyometer now) I'm glad I was holding on tight. 8O The torque was addictive.

katoranger 12-10-2007 09:31 AM

I should have bid more, but it was missing alot of parts.

Allen

TeamCheap 01-06-2008 12:29 PM

Well we just are not sure which direction we/I want to go (I dont think the wife really cares).

I really want to do a blaster project but just dont need it and it will just be in my way.
I may buy a SIKK 125 trail bike and make some changes to it but that will take some time/money and all I'll end up with is a big moped.

My wifes bike is sort of up in the air since I told her I hate her riding it around on the streets near the house "just to many jerks" and I dont want her getting hit by a car.(It's really like the wild west around here-people just run the red lights anymore-do whatever they want)
So either I'll redo the frame a bit like mine with a 250cc engine and add a better pipe and rejet it and swap the tires or part it out.If I part out hers I will most likely part out mine and look for a replacement like a drz400.

I may do some drastic things to my 02 tracker.
Lift kit +bigger tires
engine swap to a V6 +lockers
front push bar & nerf bars +winch
find a removable hardtop

IronFist 01-24-2008 12:31 AM

I got a cb350 seat pan and I'm cutting it down to make a solo seat, well I'm gonna try at least. I always wanted to do it with the chinabike but didn't. This one is metal so no staples, rivets. I plan to use fake leather to see what it's gonna look like. If it's worth it I'll get some nice leather. My stock seat is in excellent condition and they are really expensive so I'm working on an old rusted cb350 pan. My stock seat is going into a plastic bag in case I fail, or don't like the look. Bidding on some saddlebags on ebay. If all goes well, I plan to do some real riding this summer. I've been getting about a part a week since September for my bike. 60 more days till riding season  N2r.

TeamCheap 01-24-2008 03:42 AM

A part a week is about how I did my quad and it is almost complete I have to do some more work on it to catch up and see what else it may need.
I have a seat cover for it but I dont have the right tool to staple the cover on so I'll be using an old seat at first.

I have no idea how this summer will go yet I hope to get in much more riding but the main problem is I like to go offroad and we have to trailer our stuff to the trails and my blazer is getting tired so I need a new tow vehicle.

I seen a 250cc engine and exhuast for sale and thought about stuffing that into the wifes bike and redoing it like I did mine.I think I'm going to hold off on that for a while since things are up in the air as to what we are going to do with our 200gy's.

IronFist 01-26-2008 04:54 PM

Finnished my seat, LOOKS GREAT! Exactly what I wanted. Then I put it on the bike and it looked like crap  . Oh well still got my stock seat. At least now I know. Now I'm wondering about the saddle bags. I hope I don't put them on the bike and say, "Wow, that looks like crap too! :x I'll still need something to carry stuff in. :?

The Ultimate KLR

My newest project is the Ultimate KLR that I just purchased in December. I have decided to go full tilt on the '08 Kawasaki KLR650. The bike is now stripped and ready for it's new extreme makeover. The project goals are to make a better dual purpose use bike. Equal to and even better than my KTM 950 ADV was. The KTM is sacrificing itself for this project! The KLR is lighter and much easier to handle on trails than the KTM ever was. It's the perfect platform to mod and is the best value in motorcycles for the money. IMO! I have a fraction of the cost of my KTM in the KLR, even WITH the new mods.

So, far I have purchased these parts for the KLR:

Happy-Trail skidplate (black)
SW-Motech crashbars from Twisted Throttle
MRA tall windscreen from Twisted Throttle
Eagle Manufacturing balancer adjuster & raising links
Moose Racing handlebars from a TRX atv (black)
Moose Racing handguards
Moose Racing wind deflectors/protectors
Moose Racing shifter
Moose Racing stainless footpegs
Moose Racing jet kit
JA footpegs drop brackets
Superbike Gel grips
Big Gun Evo X complete exhaust system

New 19/17" tubeless Excel wheels (black) from Woody's Wheel Works were just ordered on Friday. These wheels will be 2.50" and 4.25" wide front and rear. A much larger tire selection is possible with these wheels. I already have a set of Excel rims from another project. My Excel rims and the stock aluminum KLR rims and spoked are being traded in on the new 19/17" black Excel wheels. These wheels are going to be Superlaced using much larger spokes and offer the best compromise for off-road and on-road handling. The tubeless option means I can plug the tires, if I get a flat and continue on without the need to breakdown the wheel. Woody is going to blueprint my stock Kawasaki hubs and have RAD Manufacturing machine new billet replacement hubs for the KLR. I'll get one of the first sets. Later, when the Rad hubs are available, my stock hubs will be used for a set of 21/18" off-road wheels.

The next additions include painting the silver tank and fairing black, adding new graphics and Michelin Anakee dualsport tires. SW-Motech pannier racks and Pelican bags will also make hauling gear for trips much easier. Next winter, after the warranty runs out, I'll be installing a Schnitz Racing 700cc engine kit and have the head ported with Stage 2 headwork also from Schnitz Racxing. A Rekluse auto clutch will also be added to make the bike better off-road. At this time the rear foot lever braking system will be removed and relocated to the handlebars along with a small override clutch lever.

Finally, a project that is coming together!

I'll Copy and Paste this in My New Ride thread!

SamM
