Not Charging

Hey everyone. I'm new here and recently picked up a used 2004 Maxfine Trailmaster 200 for my wife when she said she wanted a motorcycle. She had no experience riding motor bikes so I told her this would be a better starter bike than the Harley Sportster 1200 she wanted. I runs great but I ran into an issue when I got some bad advice. The guy I bought it from said it was not charging the battery. I found a single black wire that was not connected so I attached it to the negative terminal and everything seemed to be working alright. I told a mastertech (and huge dirt bike buff) at the shop I was working at about it and he told me that it needed to be attached to the positive terminal. So assuming that he of all people would know i did this and quickly realized that something was getting hot. I realized that what Im pretty sure was the CDI was smoking! I quickly removed the wire but I fear it was too late. Ever since then the headlight was very dim and recently quit working all together. I want to go with a high performance CDI instead. But mine looks a little different. It seems to be a 6 pin single plug style. It has a generic vertical Lifanoid OHV engine with the pushrod setup. My question is how difficult a swap that would be or if you even think that would cause the issue. Im a trained auto tech but I've never really gotten into bikes. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I can post pics or whatever might help you. Sorry for writing a book on my first post. Thanks.

@ joeyfroy3

Please post a picture of what you think is the CDI box..... I think you may have burnt up the Rectifier/Regulator...

Your absolutely right.

Yeah I took a look at it today and it only has four wires (red, white, yellow, green) Definitely not the CDI I found that tucked up under the gas tank. My camera sucks but here is a picture.

Hope that works. Im sure its the rectifier. But I'd still like to swap for a better CDI unit if you got any info on that.

Sorry I cant figure out the pics.

Does anyone have a link to a site where I can get that rectifier? I've found a few but they dont seem to be an exact match.

I might be wrong, but I believe you can buy a generic, chinabike regulator/rectififer from eBay. However, I hope the electrical experts will soon offer you a definitive answer. ;)

Spud :)

You should really post a picture of your rectifier, or what it is you think is bad.. It will immensely help in being able to find something for you as a replacement.

If you have problems doing so and know how to email a picture, feel free to email the picture/s to me and I will upload them for you.

Kinda blurry but that appears to be a rectifier.
Compare it to this one on Ebay

Agreed. Looks like the Lifan unit I used in The Dirt Rat.

XF125 is a legend chinese bike. 1st non-Honda using that engine type (The early batch are actually Honda CKD) in China. Had CDI BUT it's 6v.
You can compare the pictures in this maker: http://www.sanxin.com.cn/Exhibit/typelist.asp?cid=4.
This is the common "modern" rectifier (if know to re-wire it) / 2 in (AC) Yellow & pink /+ red / - green/ http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?id=1934566004

Joey, can you post a picture of the connector end of your rectifier? I'm trying to look for you but need to know the pin out.

What's this look like in comparison to what you have now? I wonder if it's a 6v rectifier like humanbeing said too.

Why buy "no brand" sh.. (w/o basic spec -How much amp etc ... )at fleabay chinese seller ??? US seller who knows what they're selling OR "BiG" name brand product directly from China are safer bet.

the xf125 ("old" CG125 w/o stater motor) had minor difference than "modern" type:
http://www.motorfans.com.cn/bbs/t_16907226.htm IMG_1603.JPG (OLD) Left: alternator are "dry" / different bearing OD | Right: there's oil seal / the difference as pictured
