My bike I just got

Ok so I bought a 92 Suzki gsx600f (katana)
I was told that there was a gsx-r engine in it, but I am not sure if that is possible because this engine is air cooled and every gsx-r is liquid cooled unless there is a way to mod it.
It has a vance & hines exhaust.

This is my only current picture I should be able to get more tomorrow.
Let me know what you guys think.

The flat paint looks pretty good. The engine is definately air cooled. I wonder if an early gsxr was air cooled. I don't know them very well.

shortyg83 08-09-2012 12:22 PM

Reading online I don't see any that were air cooled. I am assuming what happened was that they misheard what was said. I believe what was said was it was built up to be close the gsx-r motor. Because of the jetting and other engine and carb work that was done.

That makes a lot more sense to me.

It looks good murdered out. 8) I bet that pipe sounds awesome.

Are you gonna tell us about the go-kart? :D

shortyg83 08-09-2012 12:27 PM

Lol well the go cart is one of those ones that have at the go cart race parks. My brother in law, does welding and machine shop work and some times as payment gets other items. Which is how we got this bike. And how he got the Go cart.
The bike was not fast enough for him as he was coming from a much bigger ninja, and he is going to a 1000cc bike again soon. So I bought it off him.

The go cart is modded to actually go slower for my niece who is only 9 years old. But it was still a bit too much for her so she doesn't want to ride it anymore.

I see a murray too.

Early GSXRs were air and oil cooled.

I am forever on the lookout for a clean original 1st Generation GSXR1100. They NEVER come up around here. Most all have been wrecked or shamefully modified.

I liked the 600 Kats. The seat is comfortable but restrictive, you are sort of locked in there. Smooth ride, good power. Nice bike. 8)

Yea I remember seeing that some of the GSX-R had a forced air system plus were liquid cooled.

I just don't see how they could make this one a air cooled one, which is why I believe it is just a normal gsx600f engine.

Are there any other marks on the engine that may be easily seen to tell the difference?

FastDoc 08-09-2012 01:09 PM

AFAIK the early 750's and 1100's were air and oil cooled but I think all the 600's were watercooled.

Your Katana looks good, Shorty! Thanks for posting the photos. :)

Spud :)

Ok so this is what I read online about Katana Engines.

The engine on a 600 Katana is actually the old oil-cooled GSXR 750 motor with sleeves* (well, on the older engines; the late models have direct-bore cylinders with no sleeves) to choke it down to 600 CC displacement and a different set of valves & cams to change the engine behavior.

FastDoc 08-09-2012 04:44 PM

That's about right. Also lower compression and smaller carbs and different exhaust and jetting and ignition mapping. There may be other significant changes but I don't recall. This makes the Kat engine MUCH milder but useable.

So maybe it has a top end from the GSXR on it.

The GSXR600 was always water cooled.

So IF this bike is a 600 (or 599) as stamped on the block AND it's not water cooled (I can tell in the pics its not) it is not a GSXR600 engine. Can't be.

katoranger 08-09-2012 07:16 PM

Could it have a 750 top end on it? To me it looks like its stock.
