Confused on CDI
I have the Tao Tao Rhino and I am looking to get a spare CDI to carry with me.
With the engine off and the key in on position the lights come on. I'm assuming that makes it DC. But When I took off the box and compared it to parts I'm seeing on line it matches the AC plugs. 6 pin square. How do I know if I need AC or DC? |
I just googled the rhino CDI hoping for a picture ,and excalibermotorsports on eBay has them OEM for $12.95 ,for that money I would just order a few and not be bothered worrying about if it's ac or dc .

=== Check the stock wiring: AC: [key ON position]Voltage is NIL until spinned the starter (>40V) | The wire connects from stator dircectly| often in black & red DC: [Key ON postion] There's ~1?V | The wire bonded to battery / rec |
I would recommend getting one from Eagle ATV parts or another place that sells actual Taotao CDIs. I tried 3 different ones from ebay that were advertised to work on the Taotao 250 and none of them worked correctly. All too advanced.

I still haven't ordered a spare CDI for mine yet. Want to get a couple of other spare parts like the rectifier/regulator etc.
Only thing I do know is stick with a OEM CDI unless you can get a confirmed reply of a non OEM one that works. Read in a lot of places upgraded ones don't work. |

Mine looks like this.. https://www.vmcchineseparts.com/coll...c-250cc-engine Going to check Eagle for it. |
I need to slow down. Working 60 hour weeks and trying to fit this in is going to get me in trouble. I got home from work and took the CDI out with a flashlight in mouth. Put it back in the same way and it wouldn't start. I was afraid I bent a pin or something so I took the box off and put it back on about three times.
Tried pressing the kill switch 20 times and finally realized I had taken the plug wire off to give me more room. I wouldn't have been able to sleep if it hadn't started. |

CDI from VMC got here. It looks identical but haven't had a chance to plug it in yet. Worth a shot for $5.. if it works I may get a couple.
Still waiting on the carb.. didn't realize it would take almost a month to get it. |
Although it looks identical the CDI doesn't work. Shoulda listened and got the one from Eagle.

The CG engines used in Taotao quads must have the trigger coil located in a different place, or a different flywheel, or both. Wonder who the manufacturer is? Read somewhere they are CF Moto but I've seen nothing to back that up.
|
Even though I've always been told they're junk, I've only had one CDI go bad and it's when the little rubber band broke and it fell on the exhaust of my XMoto. Not cool to smell plastic and then lose power a few miles from the truck.
Now you got me paranoid. I may grab one of these as well. I wonder if the TT250 takes the same one since it's also a CG? |
For all I know the one on there may last for years.. just figure having a spare with me is good preparation. Small and easy to carry. Comparable to having extra fuses in my vehicle I suppose.
Only fuse I remember ever replacing was on a cigarette lighter. But dang it..if I ever do need a fuse I got one with me! |
