OHV or OHC?
 
My Hi-Bird engine has two caps on the valve cover: one in the front and one in the back. Doesn't that make it an OHV engine?

That would make it an over head cam, OHC!

Over Head Camshaft engines are easy to spot.
Look for the round or roundish cover near the top of the engine on the left side.

The pushrod engines we have just have one large cover on the top of the cylinder head that needs to be removed to adjust the valves.

when my motor gives up the ghost, I will try to replace with a OHC motor IF i can get it to bolt in.

My curosity has piqued. Has anyone got any specs or blue prints for the ohcs' rocker arms? As I sit back nursing my amber bock I am pondering the thought that since there is very little options of changing the cam shaft, that there might be a possaability that I might change the profile, "lift" of the cam by altering the fulcrum point of the rockers. What is the pros take on the thought? :idea:

I think it would be easier to find a similar cam with different valve timing or have one made.

But it all goes back to "just how much can these engines take".

Without having all of the needed tools/equipment I just dont think we're going to come up with anything that will change what these engines are.

I guess I'll just be happy with the simple mods I made and the performance increase I have gottten and start saving for a 400. :wink:

I am sure you COULD have different ratio rockers made, but at a significant cost. A higher lift would kinda defeat the purpose of a dual sport as it would raise the peak HP to a higher RPM and you'd lose some low end torque in the process. If you were gonna throw a bigger carb, bigger valves, ported head, advanced timing, open pipe, etc at it and keep it near 10,000 rpm all teh time, then it'd be worth the money. But, you'd have more $$ in it then it cost to buy the bike, AND a less reliable engine in the process. Sorry to sound cynical.........
