Finally got my lycan 250
 
My lycan 250 showed up today at work, I got it mostly assembled minus mirrors and fuel and final adjustments on the handlebars.

I am highly impressed with it, it is a clone of the virago 250, but it fits better on me than the vstar even though I am 6 foot 2 inches, the seat is more comfortable, and the gas tank looks big even though it is small capacity.

unlike the virago/vstar 250 I kept being told no way that is a 250cc the engine and gas tank look to big. Lifan did a very good job making this bike look and feel bigger than it actually is.

Tomorrow or maybe this weekend I plan to get some fuel for it and see if it will fire up as the tank came bone dry.

Congratulations. I've owned a 89 Yamaha Route 66. 250 wasn't nowhere labeled on the bike. everyone thought it was a 500-600cc bike. I had regretted selling that bike for many years. The Lycan is a way better bike in many ways. Definitely more bling. lol The Vstar 250 hasn't changed in all those years. Still has rear drum brake and a carb. The Laycan has disc brakes front and rear and id EFI which is a big improvement over the Yamaha. I'm going to lower my floor boards about an inch and a half. I have long legs and feel like i need to lower the floor boards just a little. At the same time, i might change the angle of the floor board slightly.

Finally got it together and have almost 50 miles on it already. I rides good and the shifting while difficult at first due to the chain being tight smoothed out quickly and is now smooth. Unlike other small cc bikes this is different, unless I am going up a hill or above 50 mph I usually never have to do more than barely touch the throttle, the bike is not quick to get to speed but that vtwin delivers torque even at light throttle.

Things I do not like, the floorboards are not close to the closest scrape point, meaning they could be down muck lower giving a less cramped feel. I you start it up and go even in warmer weather the engine stutters and surges under more throttle until the engine is at operating temp, I expect that from carburated but not from fuel injection. Last gripe is that shifting with floorboards is awkward, I have ridden a few harleys before but with foot and highway pegs, floorboards seem like a different game.

Last issue I had to get a temp tag because venom motor sports wrote venom motorsports inc on everything but when the printed and signed on the mco the only wrote venom motorsports, and texas refuses to accept it without a statement of fact from them or issuing a new mco without a discrepency between printed and signed name vs actual company name.

I had to adjust the shifter to make it better for when I'm wearing boots. I'm looking at lowering the floor boards.

Finally got it registered, had issues between the dmv and venom motorsports, venom finally faxed me the statement of fact like the dmv demanded. Then I ended up with the same woman stating it had to be faxed saying no it has to be an original signature but her first words almost came off as why are you back I will not register that pos.

She said no way I demanded she try and she said fine I will speak to the manager. she came back with the paperwork with a pissed off look on her face and never sad a word until it will be 327 dollars and your title will be mailed in 3-5 weeks. I understood texas law requiring statement of fact, but it seemed like she just had no intention of aproving anything even if jesus and the pope and donald trump and the un general assembly had all signed off on it, while I guess her manager said close enough and get to work.

I decided to do a 2 in 1 exhaust straight pipe, I already ordered some pipe and plan to weld it, but I want to keep the cat converter on it, I can heat wrap the rest but I need to figure out a heat sheild for the converter that will not overheat it, as well as some compensation for backpressure to keep as much low end as possible while stll getting that rich vtwin open pipe sound.

Finally figured out how to upload an image, the lycan single out dual in mod which gives much more room for bags. Next to it is my trusty cfmoto 650 adv.

Despite it being a better quality bike than most, still don't forget to loosen every bolt on this bike you can see, and apply loctite on it.
If you even forget one, you can be sure to find that bolt missing in a few days.

Hey beerftw, what have you done for the power loss?

I have run into a similar issue with my lycan. Right at 2.8k rpm up to 4k rpm I have consistently run across this issue.

Coming up on mile 2,000 since September as my primary ride.

Love the straight pipe, very cool.

I have not done loctite but I have double checked every reachable bolt. I figure after around the 600 mile breakin is done I will have a better idea of what to permanent red loctite vs temp blue loctite.

Mine has no power loss, I have had cold run surging which I found was actually because open loop strategy is terrible, so it surges even hot for the first short while before it goes into closed loop and runs perfect. I have not run into other lycan owners with the same issue, but it is common on harleys and even japanese bikes due to how lean they have to run to meet epa standards.

Most likely if you have a major power loss the valve adjustments are the first place to check.


The straight pipe is awesome very little torque loss and sounds great. I chose it even though dual straight pipe sounds better, the single out has better performance for everything short of drag racing plus leaving the cat converter left some backpressure to keep most of the low end torque.

Use blue loctite. One drop per bolt or nut.

If you're cheap, you can do the same with a puff of Rust-Oleum paint on the thread.

I rechecked every bolt at now close to 400 miles, every bolt still tight except the one bolt I forgot to check, the clutch lever pivot bolt, which the nut backed off of and I had to find a new nut for it.

I do not have pictures yet but I have a luggage rack on it now. The dead 81 yamaha xj650 in my yard had a rack on it, the spacers perfectly fit the front bolts, the back bolts are in but with no spacers as I have to find something to fit the back bolts.

It is oddly satisfying how a part from a more than 40 year old yamaha fit a modern yamaha clone with minimal drilling.
