Carb and Jets

Im new to the site and to motorcycles. I see alot of people talking about carbs and jets. I want to know when would i need a bigger or smaller jet? What am I looking for in the engine's performance in order to know if i need a bigger jet or smaller jet? How do I know when to look at the jet? How does changing the Airfilter effect jets? When Do I need to mess with the Air fuel mixture? I know it alot of questions and theirs alot of experience floating around here and would get some knowledge droped on me. Great Site!

If you keep your bike stock you will not need to change the jet unless you live at sea level or high elevation were there would be a slight chance that you may need a smaller or larger jet.

On the stock bikes it has been found that they run lean from the factory for most people. You can correct this be moving the c-clip on the carb needle toward the pointed end. Also adjusting the fuel screw to about 2 turns out helps. These two things help with starting/idling/revving in stock form.

If you decide you want to run a pod filter like a UNI or K&N you can probably get away with the stock jet yet. When you go from the stock exhuast to a more open exhaust and the pod filter is when you will need to rejet to a larger main jet in the carb.

I have a UNI filter and a pretty much open exhaust on my bike. I moved from the stock 98 jet to a 108 main jet and could probably go a bit larger.

The torque is improve, but the bike is loud above 5500rpm.

So when I have less restrictive exhaust go with a larger jet. Change to an aftermarket Airfilter, get new jets. Got it. What about adding things like a performance CDI would that have an effect on the jets? Again, thanks for the advice.

The CDI has proven to be more of a race only type item and not really a daily rider type mod.

The exhaust and airfilter will gain you more.
