The thickness is "not important" as far as the Profile (lateral cut) is dissymetric. you have to Mount the sprocket...

false sprocket

sorry, I have made a mistake in the selection of the sprocket.
The sprocket for Honda XR 250 R has 5mm width of the cut-outs instead of 4 mm. So the chain makes a lot of noise. I have to change it....

the sprocket which came with the bike (out of the box) has 12 teeth (I counted them). Now I have changed to 13 theeth and the bike is running much better. You can find it for example on Amazon...
