Would I even get spark if the tolerances of the stator was off, I know I have spark just not at the right time. The stator actually came off a Chinese knock of Lifan and it ran fine until one day.

Yes the gear has the play, I looked closely and its not the flywheel. I think i may order a new stator, I don't have the old on to measure anymore.

Thanks, my bud has a timing light, I already took the cover off and the flywheel has "play in it". I can move the flywheel back and forth maybe about 1/16 of a turn and the crankshaft does not move....

I will check the flywheel key. For Lifan's you don't have to remove the flywheel to remove the stator because the stator is actually mounted in the engine cover itself. Good call about the flywheel...
