Is is not "connected". What is happening is that the spark advance is so far ahead that when you go to fire the engine the initial ignition stroke it fires before TDC and is forcing the starter to work harder.
You are getting some ignition of the fuel/air mixture before the piston reaches the top of the stroke and it is almost forcing the piston to fire in reverse. The flywheel keeps it moving forward past TDC to complete to revolution. The rest of to combustion takes place forces the piston done.
Somthin like that. Yeah.
If the box worked properly the advance at idle/start would be less or stock.
