You are getting some ignition of the fuel/air mixture before the piston reaches the top of the stroke and it is almost forcing the piston to fire in reverse. The flywheel keeps it moving forward past TDC to complete to revolution. The rest of to combustion takes place forces the piston done.

If the box worked properly the advance at idle/start would be less or stock.

That's a good explaination. With that much advance, the engine is trying to fire backwards as the starter is spinning it forward. Not a good thing!
