Since the stock bags are underwhelmingly small, and I've also found myself in some super gnarly stuff where the width of the bags is an impediment, I decided to go with removable soft bags. That way when I get to the mountains, I can offload all my luggage easily and be able to ride the gnarl unencumbered.
BUT, I didn't want to pay for a full TourFella bag setup just to get the side racks. So I snagged $30 worth of steel from Lowes and welded up a set.
They're lightweight, relatively robust, and if they get bent in a tipover I can hammer them back into shape pretty easily. The left side is tucked in tight and the right side obviously sticks out more because of the muffler.
Here's a pic with the "Wild Heart" bags I snagged from Amazon. I'm all set up for touring now.
And here it is with the short trunk and no bags. This is now my default around-town setup.
