In your picture you can see better. Your correct the thin wall is more of a splash barrier than a structural part of the casing. Removing or just thinning out the material from 11
to 7 (o'clock position) position is all that's needed. I debated on removing the lip entirely but opted for removing material down to a very thin section still providing protection from road grime and dirt..

Also if I wanted to change to a crawling gear on the trail would there be any issues with a 12 tooth?
It is easy enough to change on the trail if I wanted to go back to factory gearing once off the hwy..
