You already ran the engine, right? I see no evident of exhaust gases coming up in there. But it might just be not enough time elapsed for any blackening. That exposed area may not be pressurized. What I am saying is that though not normal, it may be inconsequential. It might be a blind recess.
But if that area connects with the exhaust port, you need a new engine. Normally, I would not run the engine with that cap off.
Question for anyone... if that defect connects to the exhaust port, you could hear it plainly if you start it with that cap off, right?
