No offence intended towards my good friend Doc when I say that starting fluid can hurt. A little would probably be ok, but I wouldn't risk it. There is too great a chance of spontaneous combustion with disastrous results. The method of putting a little gas in the cylinder is much safer.
That said, have you tried a new plug? Are you running a genuine NGK? Pouring some gas into the cylinder can mask a bad plug, although I agree that the carb might be blocked.
