I believe a firm pull is required. They are installed with an o-ring.

starter is shot as well as the drive gear. Can't get the drive gear/cover to come off the motor? Might have to get a bit rougher with it?

any advice on removing the starter drive gears? Got the starter off for inspection and the splines are shot. The gear that the starter engages is missing a tooth as well. I tried getting this gear off by removing 3 cover bolts and tapping the gear lightly from the starter side. Did not feel like it was going to come off? Am I on the right path?

I think this is the point that you just replace the whole starter.

that cover with the three bolts will come off, it probably is just stuck from the old gasket under it. smack it with a piece of wood at various angles until it comes off. then pull the gear straight out, it should come out easily.

also i have a parts motor that may have the gear you need

I tried the wood block against the chrome cover in several spots. Really stuck! I hate to pry in between the surfaces for fear of marring something and causing a leak. Is this cover o ringed like the starter or does it have a standard gasket? Does the gear setup run anything but the starter? I'd like to get the gear out to verify the tooth # etc. I'll be in touch for parts. And yes. I am fully aware that the starter will need replaced!

yep those covers have a standard gasket that was installed dry and is very sticky, it will take considerable force to get it off. if there is an edge that sticks above the profile of the motor put a flat head screwdriver on it and give it a tap away from the motor.

its small enough you would probably be best off cutting one out yourself from some gasket material, you can get a roll at an auto parts store.
