Liar, Liar, Pants on Fire or How to Gut a Cat?

On my first several rides, I smelled something like canvas burning and wondered why some woman pulled up next to me and said, "Baby, you on fire!" I took it as a compliment until I noticed, sure enough, I WAS on fire.

My right Levi pant leg was noticeably shorter and now had a small ring of bright red encircling it. Wasting no time, I pulled over and put my pants out before they turned into shorts.

Later upon reflecting on the exact part of the exhaust nearest to my former pant leg I noticed, under the small ineffective heatshield, the pipe has a bulge! Is that a catalytic converter? Oh, jeese my little 80 mpg motorcycle has such a big carbon footprint, oh thank gawd big brother is taking care of us!

How can I rid my motorcycle of that? I want the next lady to tell me I'm on fire to mean something else but that may not happen on a Chinese motorcycle.

Others have done that on this site but here are a few options

1)replace the header pipe with one free of the cat or
2)cut it out and weld in a piece of pipe or
3)cut it near the cat and gut it and reweld it

I'm so glad our bikes didnt have those....WHEW although I have noticed that about the time my bike is warmed up there is a small smog cloud hanging just overhead

When I'm faced with something like that I feel I might as well go ahead and try to mod it and if it doesnt work then replace it.
(essentially it is a broken part and you have nothing to lose by modding it)

No it's not a catalytic converter, it's a sound/noise reducer. They are putting them on a lot of aftermarket head pipes now. Simply, it's a small glass pack muffler, as was put on some automobiles before the rear muffler to help reduce the sound. I have seen them on a few bikes. If yours got that hot I would suggest re-jetting your carburetor. Depending on the distance from the engines head that piece is, will determine if it's running rich or lean.

The truth is out.

Still is a restriction and if don't have welding access it would be cheaper to replace the head pipe.

Also as BRuce mentioned check your carb jetting. Was is your elevation?

It might actually not be a restriction. The "bulge" has increased diameter to compensate for the extra material. It's possible that the flow cross area of the "bulge" is the same as the rest of the pipe.

CatGut - New photos added. http://chinariders.net/gallery2/m

Thanks all for the helpful advice. Please go to my gallery and see the results of today's activities. You can see this is no sound deadener. I can't wait to see if I can keep my leg from burning. Yes, I did adjust the carb needle to the leanest notch a month ago but it still gets really hot going up the mountains here.

!WOW! Yes gut it! I haven't ever seen one like that.

They should have just Stuck a Potato in the Muffler and put some small holes in it, that would have given the same effect!!!

choking off the engine so it wont run would cut down on the smog ....I guess.

I'm all for keeping things clean but small engines like these just seem ridiculous to mess with.

Now it does 70

Gutting the cat was a big success. A few days ago my speedo read 70 for a short time and the engine is running cooler too.
