R1 shock to soft, did i miss something?

I got my R1 shock earlier in the week (its the version with the yellow spring and the piggyback reservoir upright), i have had Reds linkage design in action for quite a while and it works well. i had to chop up the top frame mount to get the r1 shock to fit, just as Red did, but its just too --- --- soft. i tried a spacer in the shock to give it more preload but about and inch of spacer was just not enough. Am i missing something, those of you who have done this, any input is greatly appreciated.

the shock red is using was a horziontal resivore.

there might be a screw on the side of the unit "not sure I did not have the vertical resivor" it is only for damping you might try adjusting that.

The vert resi shouldn't matter, BUT I don't know about the spring. Mine is silver, not yellow. Different weight??? Is the bike dropping too much with just your weight on it, or is it bottoming on bumps? My shock has 27 position clickers for compression and rebound. If you are experiencing bottoming, just crank up the compression clicker. If it is sagging too much just sittign there, you need a stiffer spring from Yammi. I go 210lbs + and my bike drops about 3 inches when I sit on it. I have the spring cranked up one position from fully stiff.

The bike sits to low even when i don't sit on it, and i don't have that many clickers on my compression and rebound, theirs about 7 and 12 respectively. So i assume im gonna need a new spring, any suggestions on where to get one and what weight i might need. i weigh about 60kg if that's any help. (not anorexic just 17 and still growing hahah :P )
Thanks
Daniel

just humor me and go check your welds, something just dosent seem right

that shock is ment to hold at least 2x as much as what you bike weighs. If you where 175-200 kg I would be able to understand the shock being soft.

the r-1 shock that we bought cost about 40-60 usd used on ebay. so if all else fails get your self the other shock :?

Hmmm. If you followed my scissor diagram to the letter, you should not be that soft. Maybe the vert resi shocks are different? I guess it is possible that Yammi changed the scissor linkages when they went to the horizontal resi and therefore changed the spring / shock rate at the same time. IF that's the case, that shock may not work. If you want to re-spring it, just go to your local Yammi dealer and tell them you need the "big boy" spring for the year R1 your shock is out of. There is more then likely 10+ different springs for that bike. I'd go as stiff as they can get you if the weight of just the bike is collapsing the spring. Then crank up your clickers and try that. The trouble is you can probably buy the correct horizontal resi shock on eBay for cheaper then the new Spring from Yammi will be .

It is rideable, but it collapses about 4-5 inches when i sit on it and bottoms out very easy. Check the welds they are fine, that was the first thing i suspected. I spoke to the guy at our local Yamaha shop earlier today and he recons the shock is probably rooted, just my luck if it is. I think i shall just try and get my hands on a horizontal resi version, looking at about $140 au shipped from America, as there is none for sale in Australia at the moment.
Me and my bad luck haha.

My R6 shock has a yellow spring, and is OK with the stock linkage. The spring is on the softest setting, it does sink a good few inches when I'm aboard, but no bottoming out.

Jonathan.

Mmmm you make me think down the line that maybe the shock is not working properly, but then again your using stock linkage and i am using Reds linkage design.... Its all too confusing.

Try riding the bike on the softest clicker settings then crank them all the way up. It should be a noticable difference in compression and rebound damping. If not, then yeah, the shock is spent. You can get it rebuilt though. Here in the states a shock rebuild is only about $50 - $75. One more option for you.

Yea i was looking at that exact shock the other night, its about 3 weeks work part time for me to pay it off, which would be worth i in my opinion.

Red i tried turning compression (top one yea?) all the way down and riding it, then all the way up and there is a very noticeable difference in the way it acts. That must mean the shock isn't broken or out of gas or whatever is in it. The guy from the Yamaha shop said the difference between those 2 shocks, vertical and horizontal resi, is one is hydraulic and one is gassed, not sure which way though. Perhaps this is the difference that's causing me problems. :?

Hmmm. If the clickers are doing there job (yes top is comp, bottom rebound) I'd just buy the "big boy" spring for it. That'll keep the bike from sagging and your Yammi dealer should be able to get one. That's probably your cheapest route and should work fine.
