Hawk manual says 1.6 US QT motor oil. Too much?
I hadn't read the manual when I filled it before, 1.25 quarts seems like the proper amount. Are we really supposed to put 1.6 quarts in it?

I used only 1 quart for the first couple hundred miles, but, when I changed the oil, I did so after being told somewhere to use 1.25 quarts. Initially, I even though 1.25 was a tad too much, but, with the engine perfectly level, it appears to be the maximum amount.
I want to use as much as I possibly can, but, not so much that my crank is splashing in it. If 1.6 quarts isn't a misprint, that's what I will use. |

I would trust the dip stick and the site glass. 1.3 qt is recommended for the TT250. I've only changed my oil once and with the bike standing up 1.3 qt is perfect in the glass. I'm sure 1.6 qt is too much, unless the counterbalanced TT engine takes less oil.

Page 29 of the online owners manual does state 1.6 quarts. My local car parts store only sells oil in liter bottles so that's my reference point. When I put 1.5 liters of oil in the crankcase the sight glass was completely covered and the oil registered about an inch too high on the dipstick. I used a catch pan and quick fingers to drain the excess. A glass pyrex measuring cup showed that there was about 500ml too much oil in the case. So with my Hawk one liter fills the crankcase 1/2 way up the sight glass and registers at the top of the crosshatch section on the dipstick. Which should be the right amount as far as I know.
Echoing motopat's above post, both the sight glass and dip stick shoukd give you the proper reading. I rest my kickstand on two pieces of 2x8 plus a 1x1 to get the bike to sit just left of level. I then tug the handlebar gently until I feel the balance point. That's when I check the oil level. Add too much oil and it'll be blown out the crankcase vent tube and into the air filter box. The oil spray might saturate your air filter. The stock filter is designed to run dry. In another thread someone mentioned that a particular lawn mower air filter is an exact fit...

I have used a quart the last two changes. That puts it right in the middle of the sight glass.

Here is a couple of responses I got on a different thread. FWIW I also use 1 quart and that seems to be right on the dip stick and window.

I've always put a quart in the non-counterbalanced CG's. Brings it right up in the glass.
The counterbalanced version is supposed to take 1.3Q according to CSC's tutorial.

The http://therps.net/ website doesn't specify [0.26] US or Imperial gallon, but, I think it is fairly safe to assume US. I think from now on I'll put in 1000 milliliters. If I were buying it in quart size containers, I'd just use the full container, but, I buy it by the gallon (Shell Rotella T 15W-40 for $13).
