Hey everyone,
Been letting my hawk sit out for the past 5-6 months so when I first started it back up last week, I had to jump start it but otherwise rode fine for the first few minutes. After about 15 minutes of riding I start noticing a sound possibly coming from the chain. I didn't really think much of it and ended my ride. I ordered a new gel battery online and replaced the stock battery today. As I'm firing up the engine it cuts out after 2-3 seconds, then at 5-6 seconds as I reattempt again and again. I've noticed that rather than revving the engine, when I twist the throttle the engine immediately cuts out. First I thought maybe I was not in neutral and I just pulled the clutch but it didn't seem to make a difference. Another thought I had was maybe the chain fell off the sprockets but I checked and it's still on. I attached two pictures to see if you guys have any ideas on what's going on FYI I'm a complete newbie with motorcycles and am not the most mechanically inclined but bought this hawk to force myself to learn. https://imgur.com/a/0cwKUmf |

You let the bike sit for 5 to 6 months, did you store empty with no fuel at all?

first thing I would personally do after letting a bike sit for a few months and it exhibiting those symptoms is to check and clean the carburetor. Modern gas in the USA has about 10% ethanol in it and it will varnish and gum up a carb if left to its own devices for too long. Pull the carb, clean the jets, and see if that helps. Also if you store the bike for a while i would recommend turning the fuel off on the petcock and running it till it dies. Also running non ethanol fuel if available helps. Hope that helps. Good luck.

its normally more but I think only like 50c more in ND. I usually just use it for my last tank or 2 for the summer. It definitely stores better. I had some 2 year old stuff I used this summer and it was still fine.

I’d toss in some Marvel Mystery oil in the tank. Carb could use a cleaning and some Ethanol sheild in the tank as winter sets in and some of us storing these for a few months you NEED TO KEEP THE TANKS FULL right to the top. Or you will find a lot of water followed by rust in the tank. It comes from the warm cold cycle but it accumulates in the tank.

I'll try the suggestions, thanks guys. Today I was finally able to get it running and had no issues although I am having a new problem which is that I am having trouble shifting into neutral...

Clutch plates may be sticking a bit due to lack of use. Use the motorcycle a bit more and see how the clutch behave.
