no muffler, how to cope?? (for now)
so I dont have a muffler (despite my bike coming with two)
I ordered one from a member on here, but its apparently lost in transit and now I have the post office looking for it :( when I ride it now I get a lot of pops and bangs like its running lean. I have the carb screw backed out a bit (not too much though) and I have a flexible pipe running from the mid pip to the back. is there anyway to make it run decent for now? midrange I have a lot of stuttering like it wants to die. |

That must be some freakin loud! It wont do any permanent damage to run it like that, but more then likely that is the source of your pops and bangs. Air is leaking into the "mid pipe" and popping. It's proabbly gonna be out of tune until you get a muffler on it, btu it shouldn't make it die because of a lack of one. More then likey you got junk in the carb. I'd pull it off and give it a good cleaning. Raise the needle up while you are in there, turn the fuel screw out two turns from fully closed. That will help your mid-range studder.

I cleaned out the carb and moved the clip up already.
I also believe the carb screw is 2-3 turns from close position. I can start seeing some of the threads on the screw. Its very loud, but I also see it as a safety factor as cars can now hear me. I also wrapped the end of the pipe in silicon (high temp stuff) and slid the flexible pipe on top of that. |

The open exhaust is making it run very lean. Been there done that.
The suggestions red gave should help, but you may want to try to make some kind of a restriction/baffle on the end of the flex tube. Possibly a cheapo riding mower muffler. Allen

I would try to find an exhaust from a honda of similar size like a crf or xr.

thing is, I want the muffler with the pipe leading to the mid pipe, the welding shop wants too much to weld some pipes together

The head pipe from an early 80s xr200 will probably fit. Did you post in the wanted parts yet? Allen
