We were a two Packard family at that time, and my dad was an immigrint from the Netherlands, and became well off by being clever plus working his butt off. He started from nothing. His first job was shucking clams in Hoboken, NJ. He took that job because everyone on the shucking crew, and on the clam boat spoke Dutch. But he worked very hard to learn English, and after two years he was fluent.

I wonder if that still happens with immigrants?
