Yamamoto 150 quad

Ho folks, just replace carb on my grandsons quad, now wont start unless I give it the starting fluid and the runs great, better than it has in a long time. Have read other forums which said low compression, bad valve lash, blah, blah, blah. If there was low compression how could it run strong once it started? I've rebuilt twin cylinder Onans and when their compression gets lower the will nor run at all or are powerless. I will do a compression test this weekend just to be sure. Any ideas?
