cx 500 stator

Hey cheesy, just wanted to drop you a quick message. Not sure if you have ever heard or dealt with this. I used to own a cx500 a few years newer than yours, but it had a problem that i thought i'd share with you. The problem i had was that after it got hot and warmed up at speed it would develop a miss. It acted almost like a rev limiter. In any case through much research i learned that many of these bikes would have hot spots due to the way the engine is mounted. This would cause the stators to fail. Well long story short i sold mine, but i thought i'd let you know in the instance that you pull/disassemble your engine you may want to investigate it.

Thanks for the tip. I have a spare stator and flywheel on hand if needed, but so far no issues there. I have heard that if the rubber air dams between the engine and fuel tank are damaged or missing, the coils can overheat from a lack of cooling air and cause a similar issue as a dying stator.

Knock on wood, the only engine issue I have is a tired cam chain.

Bit of an update.

I've been on the road for the past two weeks so nothing has gotten done other than money spent on parts and special tools. Got lucky on ebay the night before last. Found a used cam chain set with the tensioner and guides.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/261114942861...84.m1497.l2649
All I was interested in was the tensioners as those are NLA and if you can find NOS, prepare to offer up a first born. I don't think the parts had been up for five minutes before I bought them.

Mrs. C has started the ritual harping about what I've been spending on the bike, so the other night over the phone, we did an itemized list. I figured $300 for parts to do everything I wanted to do. I'm at $210 now. All I had to do to end it was ask how much did the last visit to the Audi dealer for her car cost us. Yeah, I could do this job six times over for what that cost. Throw in the Borla exhaust I put on it earlier this year and the other visit to the dealer last February and I could have thrown down a decent down payment on a new bike.

I won the argument, but I feel it's going to cost me dearly.

To paraphrase Mr. Miagyi from The Karate Kid:

"Best way to win fight?"

"Not be there."

Harp seals for me brother.

I doubt this will help win an argument with a woman but you could always remind her you're an American with a certain degree of God given and soldier and gun protected right to live, liberty, and the pursuit of Honda.

Almost ready to start tearing things down. Everything is here save for the latest whim/improvement. As I'm dealing with an electrical system that was marginal when it was new and hasn't improved any with age, I decided to go with an HID headlight.
The original Stanley headlight was a 45/55W bulb, while still available, is extremely spendy. Best price I've seen is about seventy bucks plus shipping. The H6024 that I'm using now is a 55/65W bulb, while cheap and available anywhere, puts an extra 10W drain on the system.
The HID system I bought is a 35W hi/lo system with a replaceable H4 style xenon bulb. I also sprung for a Euro style lens/reflector. The initial outlay was just about a new Stanley bulb but replacement bulbs are cheap and an H4 kept in the tool box will get me through in a pinch.

3200-3400 Lumens at 35 watts! That's bright! I'll be following this upgrade.

This will be a fun project to watch! It appears the High/Low bulb is not mechanical, but employs two different filaments. Are both filaments HID? Can you post a photograph of the HID bulb? How much do replacement bulbs cost, and where can you purchase them? You certainly can't beat the $37.50 cost of that HID conversion kit!

I just did some research and discovered your vendor sells a pair of the High/Low, H4 bulbs for $35. That's not a bad deal.

I'll post some pics when the kit gets here, Spud.

I'm curious, myself, as to how I'm going to route everything. I still have the under-seat tool box on the bike that's just hanging around doing nothing and I'm thinking it may be a good spot for mounting some electronic goodies and keeping them dry. Been thinking that would be a good spot for the fan relay, too.

Did a bit of reading and the Hi/Lo HID bulbs are mechanical.
https://www.ddmtuning.com/support/in...eid=36&nav=0,2

I've seen the dual filament HID bulbs and those are a two bulbs sharing a common base. The HID bulb is for low beam and the mated halogen bulb is for the high beam. Kinda like this.

Thanks for the update, Cheesy. I would like to experiment with HID lighting, but I fear blinding oncoming motorists. I am also concerned the light will turn off when switching beams, et cetera. :?

Headlight is here. Still a week out on the HID stuff, but the headlight is here.

Tear down starts tomorrow. I took three days off work this week to specifically work on the bike. Unfortunately, Mrs. Cheesy had other plans and I spent the last three days putting a new floor in one of the upstairs bedrooms. :x Knees and back gave out a couple times. At least it was the smaller of the two rooms, 144 sq ft.

Tomorrow and Wednesday are my days. We'll see if I'm still as good as I was when I could yank a Borg-Warner auto trans from a 60s AMC vehicle in less than an hour.

Very cool light.

re Mrs. Cheesy the trick is to take time off without her knowing.

Myself, I'll stay single.

Impossible. My plan is to earn the play time, usually by demonstrating that my knees and back have given out. Cheesy is on the right track.
