This scanner from harbor freight reads pending codes and has live data.

I found a used one on ebay that is in a price I would rather pay.

Wow! Are you parting out the Jacobsens, or taking them in for scrap value?

Weld, I will be doing some of both. If it stops raining we will offload one into the shop for destruction. What we cannot sell I will most likely scrap.

The guy at the golf course told me the the 3 reels are next to new.

Old snapper already has a new owner. I think the engine is locked up.

Just ordered two new o2 sensors. Going to pick up some new motorcraft plugs and start installing with new coil packs.

Recracer gave me a tip on removing the old plugs using carb cleaner and soaking to loosen carbon on the threads.

I didn't even spot the Snapper until you mentioned it.

I think carb cleaner is a good idea. I also wouldn't hesitate to use a little PB. A little anti-seize on the new plug threads can't hurt.

My buddy has an Expedition with the Triton 5.4. He ended up finally taking it to the dealer for the tune up after messing with it for two weekends....and he's a mechanical guy. I told him he just gave up too soon. It'll be nice to hear your input.

The newer ones have problems with the plugs staying in. The older ones like mine like to shoot them out. The problem is the carbon built up on the exposed threads of the plug inside the combustion chamber. The idea is that the carb cleaner softens this carbon before trying to remove the plugs.

The newer engines came with a 2 piece plug that often breaks off in the head.

As for the mowers. The snapper is now running. I sold it already. The jacobsen on the back also runs great, but the drive system is not connected. The other one seems to have low compression. Will need to check for a stuck exhaust valve as is common on the K series kohlers.

I saw a scanner that is identical to the HF unit you linked to, and it's on sale for $89.99 at Princess.

Still haven't fixed gulp. She has not been needed for the past week. I did get all three mowers on the trailer running. The snapper is busy cutting grass for its new owners. The jacobsen to the front of the trailer is mostly complete. The hydraulics work and the drive motors work. Might get to drive it later. The rear one is missing more parts and does not drive.

Nice! How did you identify the bad coil?

Guessing. It was the one that had the broken mount from when the plug was ejected. I pulled it off the the van ran the same. Installed newused coil and it smoothed out. Drove 100 miles with no problems.
