Definately need to remove a 2-3 links probably. I bought a chain breaker for about $20. It is easy to use and will make getting the chain right easy.

Swapping the rear sprocket will take you about 45 minutes or so. Put some loctite on those bolts. My dad helped me with the big snap ring that holds it on. We tied some wire to each end and pulled int each direction.

My Dad suggestion for getting around not having a large enough set of snap-ring pliers.

I use an angle grinder to cut links from my chains. Grind down the link at the proper point that you want the length of the chain to be. That's the tricky part, getting it right. Then you pop the chain apart and use the new link to attach the ends. Simple and easy, no chain breaker required!

Disclaimer: I'm pretty good with a grinder though, so this method may not be for everyone. Be very careful with powertools. You could hurt yourself seriously!

Thanks for all the great tips!

Where do you get an "new" link that matches 428H chain?

I was riding today and I noticed the bike seemed loud and the sound of the engine came from the front ...

Looked and a black tube that was coming from the motor near spark plug was melted away and sound of engine came from there --

It is a tube about 7 inches long and 1/2 indiameter and goes to a 2 in metal "thingy" that has another short tube with a breather thing atached.

Tube did not look like it was made for heat....

Any ideas where to get tube to replace this?

Thanks

I'm sorry, I didn't understand your message. Do you have a way of taking a pic of that militaryman.

pic 6.jpg is pic of metal tube coming off top of motor (right of spark plug) that must have gotten hot enough to melt the plastic tube.

Must be part of the emissions controls.

Also you might be able to use a dremel tool on the chain too. It may be easier to control.

Yeah My Buddy has an angle grinder so I guess I we will try to shorten the chain starting with 2 links and if that does not work take off 1 at a time after that ...

Where do I get spare links for a 428H chain?

The tube that melted appears to be part of the EGR system. I have since removed the thing from my bike and plugged all applicable orifices.....Um on the bike that is. 8O
