Never fear the drum brake. That's all my bikes had when I was learning to ride. I have a 2000 V Star 650 Classic with rear drum brakes. Even the newest V Star 650 has drum brakes. The TW200 has rear drum brakes. It did lose its front drum brake until 2001.

food for thought.... semi trucks still run drums all the way around...
I asked my Dad one time (who has been a diesel engine and heavy truck mechanic longer than I've been alive) why tractor trailers still have drum brakes. His answer was simple, he said "surface area" A brake shoe has way more contact area than a pad does. He said that brake shoes contact a drum almost the entire circumference of the drum. BUT they are also actuated by air instead of a mechanical cam on one side of the shoes.

This cracked me up - great line. Just had a vision of the greying/balding/fat ass contingent of us on here, of which I am a member in good standing, hitting the corner on our Hawks and TT250s. I'm betting Ryan Dungey will sleep OK tonight.

For what it's worth, I agree - disk preferred, drum acceptable.

the reall prob with a drum is lining dust that dosn't clear
so in the end there is a mobil surface between the shoes
and drum.... then add a bit of water it becomes a slipery
mobil surface...

to keep a drum working you never stop cleaning it...
