So Phoenixrider - You been here done this? Maybe you can fill me in on a few tips before I do this? Did you read above? I am told I may have to do some mods to the controls and install some set screws to keep the controls on? Tell me about YOUR Experience, as It will be at least a week before I'll get some Play time with mine. - Thanks.....

When I changed the bars on my bobber I drilled holes in the bars for the controls using the old bars as a guide. Just measure in from the ends the same distance and position as the old bars. You might regret grinding off the pins on the controls.

I have noticed that on these CB's. Even when you tighten the control screws nice and snug, they don't grip the bars. You can still wiggle them a little in the holes.
When I changed the bars on my Vic, I dremeled them off but they still grip the bars nice and snug upon tightening......like the good ol' days.

As stated above, I also drilled holes in my new bars. If you get the right size drill bit they wont wiggle once installed (atleast mine don't). They went on pretty easy and are well worth the hassle.

I bought the bars off motosport. They are the RM Carmichael bend for 24 bucks, link below.

http://www.motosport.com/dirtbike/pr...-78/?id=108466

The handguards are Acerbis multi-concept touring guards also from motosport.

I cannot emphasize how much smoother the bike rides with new bars, grips and handguards They have practically eliminated handlebar vibration completely.

That's excellent info, Phoenix. I've heard that comment on the forum before, but it's great to get a confirmation.

That price is impressive; I'm experimenting with an old bike right now, and I'm swapping a cush mount top triple to see if the ride is improved. I had an old XS650S when I was a kid, and the cush mount really helped. I might even try aluminum bars like you.

Started to do the ProTaper swap. I found these in my parents barn. My brother bought them for his CRF450, but the Honda uses 1 1/8" bars and these are 7/8", which is perfect for the XF200.

Old bars:

On the clutch side, there is an indexing hole:

And on the switch assembly there is a corresponding plastic tab:

On the brake (right) side, there is also an indexing hole and a corresponding metal tab inside the throttle housing:

I chose to drill new holes in the new bars. I measured in from the end, and of course I forget the measurements... I know the left side was 4 1/2" in, and I think the right side was 5 9/16" or 5 1/16". The tricky part is getting it to align around the perimeter, as I'm not sure what the final angle of the bars are going to be. But I picked a spot and drilled...

It worked out okay. I think I would have moved the hole on the left side a little to rotate the switch up a bit, but I'm sure I'll get used to it. Or I could always drill another hole. Here they are on the bike:

I have grips in my parents garage that I am going to put on. I also have risers on the way (Thanks Andrew! :wink so it's not all buttoned up yet. Also the color in the photo is really off. They have that matte anodized look and are a richer, more maroonish red. I think they look pretty sweet. I also pulled all the stickers off the one side of the bike to see what it is going to look like. I think I like it.

I wish my parents had a barn with bike parts in it.

Those are nice looking bars. I really like the stealthy look on your bike. 8)

update

I swapped over the Controls today, to the new Pro Taper Handlebars. All I had was my Shitty Camera - Sorry about that. My Fiancee' took the good camera today for our daughters first easter egg Hunt. - Much more important anyways - I put the Bar end Mirrors on the end of the bars. New Grips, New Bars and new clamps. I drilled the holes as mentioned above no problem. I like the bars way better. They are higher and wider. The grips feel way better as well. Heres the Pics.....

Nice job. those grips and aluminum bars will go a long way to saving your hands from some vibration.
